cptnemo
I have tried to emerge Chromium and Atom but they have failed because of space constraints. I have followed this Gentoo wiki and it did not work: https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Portage_TMPDIR_on_tmpfs . Any idea what I can do to fix this? Thanks! 0 cptnemo
I should probably mark this thread as solved because I know that I just need more memory. Not sure how to do that. Thanks to everyone who helped figure out this problem. However, since this is an old laptop and I got it cheap, not sure that I want to put any more money in it. May just get a newer one instead. 0 cardinal
When ram is too small to build large packages in tmpfs follow these instructions to create exceptions so they are built on the hard drive.Portage can be configured to build large packages outside of the tmpfs space on a per-package basis. 0 Oleg Vinichenko
you can by-pass this by: I_KNOW_WHAT_I_AM_DOING="1" emerge chromium however during compilation system calls exceeds 2GB on 64 bit for chromium, so it may surely fail. Yes, binary version could be an alternative.

I already have google-chrome installed, but there are other programs that I was hoping to install, like the text editor Atom. Also, I am trying to get Aptana Studio working but it keeps asking for Chromium for the embedded browser and I have not been able to get it to use Firefox instead. So, is my only option to get more RAM, or is there something that I might have done wrong when trying to make Portage use my hard drive instead of my RAM? 0 Oleg Vinichenko
yes, more RAM will fix this. As said, chromium on 64-bit systems during compilation exceeding 2Gb(and there is no 32 bit version from upstream anymore).
0 Oleg Vinichenko
alternatively, use precompiled bin versions such as firefox-bin or google-chrome.
-1 k9dog
You probably can compile just fine on a 32 bit system, so ignore the comments about trashing your machine or updating beyond it's capility. 64 bit code takes about twice as much as 32 (less, but you can disable some features). In many cases Chromium can be compiled setting I_KNOW_WHAT_I_AM_DOING="yes" on same line as emerge. Some programs don't have this feature (Rust I think ia lacking it). It unfortunate as it makes Gentoo/Funtoo less likely to be systen of choice on embedded systems, where the finished system really shows its strength.
