downgrade to portage-2.3.8: Default distfiles and packages directories are now in /var/cache/portage

Question

I updated (emerge -vauND @world) this morning (I'm using kits) and was told:

Funtoo's downgrade to portage-2.3.8 is intentional. we are syncing with upstream versions.

SOMEWHAT IMPORTANT:
Default distfiles and packages directories are now in /var/cache/portage. Please adjust your system as needed!

I'm a newbie and I'm afraid I'm not positive what this means. I never changed DISTDIR or PKGDIR.

I'm guessing it means eclean/eclean-dist (which I hadn't yet used) will now never clean up /usr/portage/distfiles or /usr/portage/packages but otherwise doesn't matter to me -- is that right?

right, you can move the content of /usr/portage/distfiles into the new location /var/cache/portage/distfiles if the download is the concern (tarballs need to be refetched), other wise you shouldn't be much worry about it and delete old directories. eclean will work with the new location, then.
