glibc emerge fails

Question

Hi,

I am trying to do:

emerge -uDNv world

on a new install, but it quits when it tries to emerge glibc.

Here is the output of emerge --info:

When it fails? before, during compilation?, paste the output of the failure, but before just to make shure your settings are right, since you say it's a new install, did you edited /etc/locale.gen to match your locale and charset and run locale-gen as root? I was reading some tutorial this week about gentoo vms,  mostly unrelated,  but it mentioned to do this before trying to update glibc, if you didn't want to take all day long(I guess that meaning troubles).

Hi,

I am still unable to emerge glibc as part of

emerge -uDNv world

Is it okay to put glibc into /etc/portage/make.profile/package.provided and thus skip emerging it?

Thanks,

Don James

donjames, please post the full build.log file (using pastebin for example), as the part you posted is missing the actual error message. With this information, it will be easier to help.

linuxboy, it seems your issue is a different one than donjames, I suggest you create another forum thread, as helping with both problems in the same thread will be very confusing.

I am taking a friendly guess out of ignorance. This line caught my eye: <[31;01m*[0m   emake || die "make for ${ABI} failed">

Your ${ABI} is "x86". Could it be something like compiling the kernel for 32 bit vs. 64 bit? You could look at the top of your .config???? file and see something like:

#
# Automatically generated file; DO NOT EDIT.
# Linux/x86 3.14.4 Kernel Configuration
#
CONFIG_64BIT=y
CONFIG_X86_64=y
CONFIG_X86=y

Did you recently change that or this in /etc/portage/make.conf?:

sys-libs/glibc-2.18-r1 was built with the following:
CFLAGS="-mtune=generic -pipe -O2 -fno-strict-aliasing"
CXXFLAGS="-mtune=generic -pipe -O2 -fno-strict-aliasing"

Maybe you need more room on disk? Can use 'df' to see how full the partition where /usr/portage/ lives? You could look at the manpage for eclean (man eclean) and run something like 'eclean-dist' if you need room.

Otherwise, I would just guess with @Xxx-rebuild targets per 'emerge --list-sets', try perl-cleaner for the heck of it, and then try unmerging packages to make the world set smaller and see if you can get the core stuff to update first.
