Enterprise class HDD failure rate quantified

Recommended Posts

Here is a simple and short article detailing the failure rates of popular Enterprise class hard disk drives:

https://blocksandfiles.com/2019/08/08/backblaze-reveals-hdd-failure-rates/

And the long and detailed article:

https://www.backblaze.com/blog/hard-drive-stats-q2-2019/

I hope this helps my fellow Funtoo users when deciding what new hardware to buy.

The linked article "why hard drives fail" from the above fails to mention one of the most frequent failure modes that I have observed with my usage: the SATA connectors breaking after only 2-3 uses due to poor plastics used. Sometimes they can be repaired (on one drive I cut the end of a SATA cable and soldered the wires directly to the drive's PCB) but sometimes they're not.
