after install get desktop

I have a base CLI installation. I have Xorg that I can run from startx command.

After installing lightdm (confifuring /etc/conf.d/xdm to start it and adding rc-update) and mate, I cannot get LightDM to start upon boot or start even after manually using rc-service.

I installed SDDM and it will not start either (changed config again). What am I doing wrong?

The Wiki page on Mate (<- link!) stipulates it needs dbus as a prerequisite, so:

rc-update add dbus default
rc
