Any insights into what to try to fix the screen refresh or the lesser issues would be welcome. I am out of package masking ideas. I have no idea what to address.
I have updated my kernel and then @world after months. World update was 243 packages. As a result, the desktop display is painfully slow, 2-5 seconds of delay is usual. Less critically, but if you have insights, I also notice that in firefox 53.0 the text I highlight in a url or search box shows no highlighting and the cursor disappears. That is in addition to the scrollbar on xfce-terminal being nearly invisible because of poor contrast for some time. Seems like poor contrast is contagious.
Have Sony VAIO that has two GPUs. I have never been able to take advantage of that on Linux. Indeed, getting the xorg.conf to work was I nightmare because I need the both the 'intel' and 'radeon' drivers installed but I can only inform the Xserver about intel, for as long as I've used this laptop. Wondering if I have multi-GPU because of this Gentoo issue: "[sOLVED] Slow, lagging desktop GUI with AMDGPU-PRO" at https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-8046212.html. I don't understand what got solved. (In funtoo forum from Oleg I see: https://github.com/Lucretia/vulkan-overlay/issues/32, but not the same issue , it seems.) I don't see my problem online, which concerns me.
As part of my update I had replaced packages radeon-ucode and iwl6030-ucode with linux-firmware package. I tried going back to those original packages, did not change anything. I tried my previous (vanilla) kernel, did not change anything. I tried editing xorg.conf. No Xwindows came up when I tried xstart. I forced default config by renaming the xorg.conf file. Same refresh problem but with tiny resolution and big screen elements. I tried downgrading x11-base/xorg-server-1.19.1_p20170228:0/1.19.1_p20170228 to xorg-server-1.19.1 and 1.18.4. No change. I tried downgrading xfdesktop from 4.13.0 to 4.12.3. Same refresh problem. I did a fresh emerge --sync and got some updates about 24 hours later and that did not help.
I could try mucking around with kernel configuration of memory I suppose. An alternative desktop? I am out of decent guesses. SOS. What part of the architecture do I care about? Not care about for this problem?
