    Distcc makeopts

I recently noticed this post by Oleg He mentions that setting makeopts is not really necessary. Is that true even when using distcc? I currently have this in my make.conf MAKEOPTS="-j65 -l8" FEATURES="distcc distcc-pump" Is my makeopts line unnecessary?
  2. Hi folks O/ few years ago I wonder about a friendly version of Gentoo and Funtoo, the gentoo community don't liked, but I keep did some tests but I didn't continue, well, few week ago I start again, but this time only a Funtoo Friendly version, and now I have something really beginning. the project will resume in few flavors and one version with a overlay with update packages and few extra. the funtoo flavors are X+openbox, gnome and Plasma, they are just the Funtoo Stage3 Generic with few packages and some configuration. and has one version with plasma, but with an overlay with few update packages and other stuffs, a stage more out of the box, I want make something to people learn about gentoo/funtoo or for who use the system without spent hours to build the system. the webiste will be done in the next weeks, and the stages will be available in the next days "sorry, I'm with one pc now, and the net is a turtle". website -> https://bentoo.info/ binhost -> http://binhost.bentoo.info github repos : overlay -> https://github.com/lucascouts/bentoo configurations -> https://github.com/lucascouts/bentoo-portagedir I don't know if the funtoo community will like but anyway I'll forward with this project, but will be great if few users could help with feedback or criticisms. thank you anyway 🙂

    Masked by corruption

!!! All ebuilds that could satisfy "gcc" have been masked. !!! One of the following masked packages is required to complete your request: - sys-devel/gcc-7.3.0::core-kit (masked by: corruption) - sys-devel/gcc-7.2.0::core-kit (masked by: corruption) - sys-devel/gcc-6.4.0::core-kit (masked by: corruption) - sys-devel/gcc-6.3.0::core-kit (masked by: corruption) - sys-devel/gcc-5.4.0-r1::core-kit (masked by: corruption) - sys-devel/gcc-5.4.0::core-kit (masked by: corruption) - sys-devel/gcc-5.3.0-r2::core-kit (masked by: corruption) - sys-devel/gcc-5.3.0-r1::core-kit (masked by: corruption) - sys-devel/gcc-4.9.4-r1::core-kit (masked by: corruption) - sys-devel/gcc-4.9.4::core-kit (masked by: corruption) - sys-devel/gcc-4.8.5-r1::core-kit (masked by: corruption) I have got my system in a very sorry state. Trying to run on 1.3. If i try and emerge gcc I get the previous errors not sure where to start. Updated portage, replaced the /var/git/meta-repo Any pointers would be great. Thank you
  4. Hi, and thanks for taking a look. So, trying to merge www-client/firefox-60.2.2 here. I have seen some cryptic error messages from Portage, then I have seen some weird error messages, and now this one wins the cake: [ebuild N ] www-client/firefox-60.2.2::net-kit USE="dbus eme-free gmp-autoupdate hwaccel jack screenshot system-harfbuzz system-jpeg system-libevent system-libvpx -bindist -custom-cflags -custom-optimization -debug -geckodriver -hardened (-neon) -pulseaudio (-selinux) -startup-notification (-system-icu) (-system-sqlite) -test -wifi" L10N="-ach -af -an -ar -as -ast -az -bg -bn-BD -bn-IN -br -bs -ca -cak -cs -cy -da -de -dsb -el -en-GB -en-ZA -eo -es-AR -es-CL -es-ES -es-MX -et -eu -fa -ff -fi -fr -fy -ga -gd -gl -gn -gu -he -hi -hr -hsb -hu -hy -id -is -it -ja -ka -kab -kk -km -kn -ko -lij -lt -lv -mai -mk -ml -mr -ms -nb -nl -nn -or -pa -pl -pt-BR -pt-PT -rm -ro -ru -si -sk -sl -son -sq -sr -sv -ta -te -th -tr -uk -uz -vi -xh -zh-CN -zh-TW" 0 KiB (...) * ERROR: www-client/firefox-60.2.2::net-kit failed (configure phase): * USE Flag 'clang' not in IUSE for www-client/firefox-60.2.2 * * Call stack: * ebuild.sh, line 92: Called src_configure * environment, line 5620: Called use 'clang' * phase-helpers.sh, line 247: Called die * The specific snippet of code: * die "USE Flag '${u}' not in IUSE for ${CATEGORY}/${PF}" Your insight about what is going on here would be much appreciated. 6. Hi, I tested the Metro days ago and is amazing, but I have alot of questions and I don't find a documentation, just a simple tutorial link : http://www.funtoo.org/Metro I'm not an expert on Funtoo so I need a documentation to learn. example of few questions: - how can I add a make.conf modificated to new stage - change the python version - change the gcc version and recompile the toolchain I really appreciate if someone create a article with more details about Meto. thank you.
  7. I did not update my system for a long time and also missed the announcement for the meta-repo thing. I decided to update, read a lot of links from the forums etc. and ended up screwing up my build system. (for example this post ) # epro === Enabled Profiles: === arch: base build: (not set) subarch: (not set) flavor: (not set) mix-ins: (not set) === Python kit: === branch: 3.4-prime # emerge -vpuD --newuse @world !!! /etc/portage/make.profile is not a symlink and will probably prevent most merges. !!! It should point into a profile within /var/git/meta-repo/kits/core-kit/profiles/ !!! (You can safely ignore this message when syncing. It's harmless.) # ls -al /etc/portage/make.profile lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 62 Aug 7 10:48 /etc/portage/make.profile -> /var/git/meta-repo/kits/core-kit/profiles/funtoo/1.0/linux-gnu "epro flavor server" prints out a huge stacktrace. "emerge --info" does the same: File "/usr/lib64/python2.7/site-packages/portage/package/ebuild/_config/LocationsManager.py", line 249, in _addProfile self._addProfile(parentPath, repositories, known_repos) File "/usr/lib64/python2.7/site-packages/portage/package/ebuild/_config/LocationsManager.py", line 249, in _addProfile self._addProfile(parentPath, repositories, known_repos) File "/usr/lib64/python2.7/site-packages/portage/package/ebuild/_config/LocationsManager.py", line 249, in _addProfile self._addProfile(parentPath, repositories, known_repos) File "/usr/lib64/python2.7/site-packages/portage/package/ebuild/_config/LocationsManager.py", line 227, in _addProfile parents = grabfile(parentsFile) File "/usr/lib64/python2.7/site-packages/portage/util/__init__.py", line 131, in grabfile mylines = grablines(myfilename, recursive, remember_source_file=True) File "/usr/lib64/python2.7/site-packages/portage/util/__init__.py", line 574, in grablines mode='r', encoding=_encodings['content'], errors='replace') as myfile: File "/usr/lib64/python2.7/codecs.py", line 303, in __init__ IncrementalDecoder.__init__(self, errors) RuntimeError: maximum recursion depth exceeded while calling a Python object So basicaly i'm stuck here and don't know how to continue. "ego sync" is working fine, so the meta-repo structure seems to be OK. Can anyone please help me to get back a working system? Thank you, Thomas
  8. error when update the profile to version 1.2 and use "ego sync" the first line is uncommented "/var/git/meta-repo/kits/core-kit/profiles/base/make.defaults"
  9. I am building funtoo root images for a different target architecture than the build system and wondering if that is causing some packages to fail to run. I am starting with a generic subarch: https://www.funtoo.org/Generic_64 And, I modify /etc/make.conf to: CHOST="x86_64-pc-linux-gnu" CFLAGS="-march=x86-64 -O2 -pipe" CXXFLAGS="-march=x86-64 -O2 -pipe" CPU_FLAGS_X86="mmx mmxext sse sse2" I do that to hopefully ensure that gcc won't build for my system which is an i7 and the target systems are a 64-bit Intel Atom and a 64-bit AMD netbook processor. However, I still am unable to run a select few applications as I get invalid opcode during execution (they do run just fine on the system on which I built them). Am I missing a step to build for a different target architecture? I don't believe distcc is required here, but all I really want to do is tell gcc not to use march=native which it prefers to do by default.

    About new kit released.

Hi, I'm already using the gcc version 7.3, I wonder if I need reinstall the gcc if change the kits to version 1.2 ? or just keep the tutorial skip that step.
  13. Hello, I am trying to install Funtoo and have been having a tone of blocks, and desided to start fresh and os-prober has been a reacuring ofender. 14. Hi, I liked the portage-kits, but the local overlay don't allow use repoman anymore, I'm building few ebuilds but is one by one. and when change the branch of submodules to "master" and update the repo and submodules they back to stable, how can I fixed in master
  15. Let me preface this post by saying I hope it will be constructive. It's not my intention to simply complain or vent. I wanted to share my experience updating one of my funtoo systems the past two days, because I feel that kits (so far) may not be living up to their promise. I had hoped they would smooth over some of the headaches of system upgrades. My upgrade process went something like this: Blockers where USE=qt4 had to be added to several packages, successively. That is... emerge @world; long wait; portage reports package needs USE=qt4; add USE flag; emerge @world; long wait; portage reports package needs USE=qt4; add USE flag; emerge @world; long wait; portage reports package needs USE=qt4; and so on. Blocker related to libreoffice. I had earlier keyworded libreoffice for stable only, as I really don't need the latest and it's a beast to build. Well, at this time there isn't a single stable ebuild in the tree. Oddly, there is still a stable ebuild for libreoffice-l10n. Anyway, I had to remove the stable keyword. To resolve some other blockers, I ended up using 'emerge -C' on 5 packages (e.g., kget and media-sound/picard). I kept a list of these so I could re-merge them at the end. I removed the 'legacy-systray' USE flag from plasma-desktop to resolve some other blockers. About this time, I was finally able to get it to start installing some updates. I'm getting odd build failures for virtualbox-modules, which I ignore for now and use '--keep-going' (will come back to this). Encountered a build failure in package pambase. With research, found an issue in the tracker that was fixed yesterday morning, so needed to 'ego sync' mid-upgrade. Now, it's 'emerge @preserved-rebuild' time, but it's blocked by a conflict with package doomsday. Use 'emerge -C doomsday' to resolve. I think it was here that I dealt with the app-emulation/wine to virtual/wine change. Not terrible, though I was a bit confused why I seem to need wine-vanilla if all I want is wine-staging. Perhaps I could if I emerge 'app-emulation/wine-staging' directly instead of going through 'virtual/wine'? I didn't want to stop the upgrade at this time to figure it out. Time to resolve issue with virtualbox-modules. It's giving multiple complaints that it "can't find Makefile" and "can't find .config file", and that I need to make sure that '/usr/src/linux' points to a full kernel source tree. I check, there is nothing wrong with the symlink, it points to the folder for the current running kernel, the folder contains a Makefile and .config file, and the folder still contains sources. The only possible problem I can figure is the ebuild for this kernel is no longer in the portage tree. So, I stop to upgrade the kernel, and the problem goes away. Now it's time to re-merge the packages I removed earlier, one of which is quodlibet. Only, portage complains it can't install the latest quodlibet because of some funky python issue with package dev-python/faulthandler I don't understand. I find no mention of this in JIRA or forums, so I just let it install the old version. I've just now discovered that portage is no longer picking up my local overlay. I'll need to research that, too. It's certainly wasn't the most painful gentoo/funtoo upgrade I've ever been through, but I can't really say it was any easier than typical. Especially considering this was a shorter upgrade cycle than usual for me (only about a month), and I keep customizations on this system to a minimum. Anyway, as I said at the outset, I wanted to share my experience in the hopes it is constructive. Cheers!

  17. Hi folks, I read that on Gentoo news, about the update on system profile to them : https://www.gentoo.org/support/news-items/2017-11-30-new-17-profiles.html and I ask if I need rebuild the whole system ? I mean, I was using gcc 5.4.0 and I upgrade to 6.4 both withour hardened, so I need rebuild ?
  18. Can /usr/portage be deleted now that /var/git/meta-repo stores all the ebuild info?
  19. Hello everybody, Could somebody give me some hints finding a detailed howto /eventually the git page about the algorithm used by Funtoo/Gentoo. I'd like to understand the way it calculates the dependency resolution. As far as i can understand, this is made during the emerge -(p)vDuna @world option. Am i right if i am saying this is done through the root/trunk/leave node dependency calculation (written in python?).

    kit's master branches

hello again, i've the following set into my ego.conf: xorg-kit = 1.19-prime media-kit = 1.1-prime kde-kit = master however on today sync i've got this message: "Kit kde-kit branch master specified in ego.conf is not currently active; using default kit instead." so why can i not choose kde-kit's master branch anymore in ego.conf? i've forced the master branch checkout by adding: @git -C /home/meta-repo/kits/kde-kit checkout origin/master || true into eix-sync.conf, however i wonder why these kind of hacks are necessary... thank you

    Dirty package.use

Hi, When using funtoo, regularly doing update/upgrade, sometimes I have messages about modifying /etc/portage/package.use. At this time my package.use contain (too) many changes like this The question is: How to know when it is the time to remove the lines (the forced change)?

    kits logic

hello devs (oleg) :) i wonder what are the rules behind this new kit organization... do packages from the master branch eventually make into a prime branch or are prime branches virtually immutable? if the former, after lying into the the master branch for some time (like gentoo's stable/unstable)? how long? any other criterion instead? if the latter, are "stable users" supposed to jump from prime-n to prime-n+1 branches at their discretion? for example i'm on the default 5.10-prime kde-kit's branch and i see that kde-plasma-5.11.0, kde-frameworks-5.39 and kde-apps-17.08.2 were added to the master branch. i expect at least kde-apps-17.08.2 to make into the 5.10-prime branch since it's a bug fix release, while kde-plasma-5.11.0 to be sometimes added to a new default 5.11-prime branch since it's a major release, not sure about frameworks-5.39 but i consider it pretty safe to include it into 5.10-prime after reaching master for some time... so just curious to know how this new kit organization method works and what's its internal rules :) thank you
  23. Is it possible to use apt-get along with portage? My reason for doing this is that i require a ppa for the system76 driver. That would be the only reason for wanting to use apt-get. Also, has the system76 repo been forked so it is compatible with Funtoo?

Sticky post for the switch to Kits?

With the on-going change, it's expected that we, users, have several and different, difficulties. And while it is impossible to deal with all at once, I feel that one sticky thread should be there to guide. Or use only github's issues feature. Myself, have posted in various threads during the last weeks. And contribute, this way, in more noise. Apologies for that. Can we have one sticky thread for the Switch? Thank you
