  1. Hello everybody, Could somebody give me some hints finding a detailed howto /eventually the git page about the algorithm used by Funtoo/Gentoo. I'd like to understand the way it calculates the dependency resolution. As far as i can understand, this is made during the emerge -(p)vDuna @world option. Am i right if i am saying this is done through the root/trunk/leave node dependency calculation (written in python?).
  2. kit's master branches

hello again, i've the following set into my ego.conf: xorg-kit = 1.19-prime media-kit = 1.1-prime kde-kit = master however on today sync i've got this message: "Kit kde-kit branch master specified in ego.conf is not currently active; using default kit instead." so why can i not choose kde-kit's master branch anymore in ego.conf? i've forced the master branch checkout by adding: @git -C /home/meta-repo/kits/kde-kit checkout origin/master || true into eix-sync.conf, however i wonder why these kind of hacks are necessary... thank you

  4. Hello! Once I had updated world and got x11 packages was broken : http://forums.funtoo.org/topic/1224-xorg-modules-fail-while-update-world/ I use Funtoo on two laptops: one I use everyday and can spell much time for experiments. Other needs to be workable without my attention. Is there emerge flags that will show me world update will go fine: all dependencies will be solved correctly ??

  8. Hi, sorry ask things like that again, so I want to know if possible install local packages with emerge ? I know install manually, but will not show on emerge that package are installed, I was wondering about that.
  9. Circular Dependencies

So I decided to give Funtoo a try. I managed to get through the install process with little trouble. The biggest issues I ran into were 1) It was not at all clear what to put in make.conf; and 2) There was no mention of how to use LVM. On both those issues I just winged it, and managed okay. I was able to boot to a login prompt (Yeah!). But now I am stuck, b/c every attempt to emerge anything just leads to a slew of circular dependencies. I managed to force emege gcc, but beyond that I now seem to be thuroughly stuck. Please help.
  10. I am trying to install mate and I'm getting stuck on this one package, engrampa. * Messages for package app-arch/engrampa-1.8.1-r1: * Cannot find $EPATCH_SOURCE! Value for $EPATCH_SOURCE is: * * /usr/portage/app-arch/engrampa/files/engrampa-1.8.0-caja-schema-fix.patch * ( engrampa-1.8.0-caja-schema-fix.patch ) * ERROR: app-arch/engrampa-1.8.1-r1 failed (prepare phase): It seems to me like the problem is it cannot find a patch that does not exist. I have not a clue how I would even fix this issue and I have looked for the patch on it's own but I came up dry. I also have tried masking the caja use flag for this specfiic package and it still gives me the same result even after confirming -caja was being used. Here is the whole output of when I emerge mate : http://pastebin.com/yD98VJ9Y and here is my emerge --info '=app-arch/engrampa-1.8.1-r1' output : http://pastebin.com/MSM0DtN3 Thanks in advance.
  11. Can't emerge nodejs

Hello, I'm a new happy Funtoo user and I'm having troubles with nodejs installation. It complains on missing openssl/ec.h. How to get it installed? The issue is similar to this one: https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-854118-view-previous.html?sid=8a56e78a29e0c9518e4300f571a842e7 but enabling the bindist flag for openssl didn't help: $ equery files openssl | grep "ec.*h" /usr/include/openssl/objects.h Please help, thanks!
  12. Hello Funtoo Community, this is my first post here, but I am working with Linux generel for many years now. A long time with Gentoo Linux. I want to setup a completly new system as my workstation. Everything for now works fine and I got a very fast and responsible base system. As my desktop environment I want to have the newest version of Xfce 4.12, but no ebuild exists in default Funtoo portage tree. So I search a little bit and found a suitable ebuild in Gentoo's portage tree. I added the tree as overlay using layman. Everything seems to be fine, but when I'm doing emerge -av xfce4-meta only the 4.10 version will be offered. I tried several trings, adding version number: emerge -av xfce4-meta-4.12 the i got no result. Or adding portage tree suffix: emerge -av xfce4-meta::gentoo, or all in combination....still no result. No plan what I'm doing wrong. So please help me! :) That would be SO GREAT!!! 13. Attempted my two first Funtoo (or Gentoo-based) installs using the BIOS+GRUB(MBR) option (unsecured boot, legacy support) as System Rescue would not boot with secure boot, and having used Ubuntu-based distros off and on for an aggregate total of c. 2 yrs, migrating as disappointed to learn about pitfalls of systemd. Laptop is HP AMD64 with an A10 (?'pile driver' I suspect) 4-core. Neither of the two Funtoo install attempts got to a command prompt stage, and I suspect that this was due to my errors. The bootup processes for both install attempts stopped with a message like 'INIT: no more instructions at this run level'. I did try to begin posting most of these queries on your IRC channel, and I did get some reassurance there, thank you, but I am not adept at handling IRC so I would be grateful for your guidance here. My errors were as follows:- (a) on first install, interrupted emerge/compile during second last instruction on the Funtoo installation instructions page re emerging NetworkManager, as the laptop eventually powered off having disconnnected AC power for fear of heating up; (b) on first install, I only attempted to issue the last instruction about executing the passwd root command after powering up from a System Rescue CD on next day, having tried to issue the emerge NetworkManager command again to pick up where this installation had been interrupted on the previous day (see error messages at bootup further down in this post); © the first snag on attempting a reinstall (the 2nd install attempt), the fdisk reported that the HDD was only c. 698Gb so it had somehow shrunk from c.800Gb; testdisk command within System Rescue CD reported something like 750Gb/698Gb, and further examination by testdisk revealed lost partitions, including a lost 'linux' and a 'FreeBSD' partition even though I had never installed FreeBSD! The laptop has only ever had Windows 8 (from factory)/8.1, Ubuntu-based distros and some attempted OpenBSD installations, so I have wondered whether someone has tried (successfully?) to install FreeBSD while I used several wifi public connections without a VPN, and usually with a firewall or iptables. Someone on IRC channel kindly suggested that the FreeBSD partttion may have been a remnant of a previous (OpenBSD/Un*x?) install. (d) While attempt to redo the install (the second install attempt) by running fdisk or one of the other first instructions to install Funtoo, I was also surprised to get the message that there was already a dev/sda2 partition (I had just done the 'o' command to wipe out the former partition table created during the first funtoo install attempt and created the boot partition immediately after), but it declared that somehow there was already a dev/sda2 (formatted?) partition, so would I want to proceed anyway? Anyway, I said yes. (e) on second install attempt, also lost power and interrupted emerge, but earlier on during that install, and had to leave the public wifi connection during the emerge NetworkManager instruction about half way through that emerge instruction (this prompted messages of a forced install without dependencies therefore for about half the 46 'packages' in the NetworkManager emerge process); (f) having already described the shortcomings committed in (a)-(e), here is another important mistake perhaps: a recent version of the instruction page (http://www.funtoo.org/Funtoo_Linux_Installation) may have inadvertently repeated an instruction at the 'Installing a Bootloader' stage for MBR-GRUB installations (to do a '(chroot) # boot-update' instruction twice), and I executed that instruction twice nonetheless (obviously this would have been an error on my part) during both install attempts, although I think the webpage may have been updated since then and Funtoo's instructions are very helpful and look forward alot to use Funtoo. I think that the error messages during bootup for the first install attempt were quite possily the same or very similar to the following, which I also saw during some of the early bootup instances following the second install attempt: "Creating user login records [...] etc/initd/bootmisc line 92: /var/log/wtmp read only file system Error INIT: bootmisc failed to start, read only filesystem" I did not know how to get a shell prompt, so to try to power down the system, I thought to do Ctr+alt+delete after bootup following the second install attempt, and this began a power-down procedure which included the following message: "WARNING: [.......?] /lib64/rc is not writable. " My main queries: what would you suggest should be done to recover the c.50Gb area of the HDD in view of a mysterious 'FreeBSD' partition area, and how to do things differently besides ensuring a continuous AC supply and internet connection? I don't know if I have locked myself out of the partitions having perhaps chrooted myself of the system (I am not quite adept at Linux yet, so this concern might be completely way off), or seeing how I was not able to issue a passwd instruction during the first install attempt until powering up a second time, and also seeing how fdisk insisted that there had still been an sda2 partition even though I had instructed fdisk to clear the partition table on my second install attempt. I could try looking into testdisk recovery facility further. I would appreciate your thoughts very much. Thank you!

So I'm a little confused about these messages. The last time I messed with abi flags, things didn't go so well. Could someone clarify, please? What flag and where should be set for an AMD64 system.

  16. OK, I have my kernel in @system, not in @world, and my kernel sources don't support 3.17 yet because its ck-sources, nor do I want to upgrade my kernel. I'm tired of compiling and tired of stuff being broken. WHY is it trying to install kernel-headers 3.17-r1? My kernel is 3.13, so this sounds like a really BAD idea. Shouldn't portage be smart enough not to do this? Maybe funtoo was a bad idea. Weeks now and still not finished installing! This shouldn't be this difficult. I only did a sync because it was supposed to fix gedit's vapigen thing, and its still broken just giving me different error (see other thread), php is still not building due to sandbox violations, and now I have a new problem I didn't have before. Next step is a hammer! Anyone know how to fix this??
  17. Paludis?

Just wondering if anyone has tried Paludis and/or Exherbo and what they thought of it. I'd rather have the opinions of the guys here rather than ask over there as I'm pretty sure they'll just tell me why they are so great. I wanna hear it all. http://paludis.exherbo.org
  18. window title

Am I imagining things, or was there a flag to pass to emerge that makes it set your window title to the currently building package along with the [x of y] style designation? Like changing the window title to "[3/5] apache" If it doesn't exist, would anyone but me find it useful?
  19. Gnome update issues

Hello, 2 days ago I installed Funtoo following this guide: http://www.funtoo.org/Funtoo_Linux_Installation I took me 2 days to compile X11, Gnome and Firefox. Now it ist ready and I tried an update with "emerge --sync" and then "emerge -uavDN @world". But that did not work because there are several conflicts. First, there was a conflict in empathy, forcing a different version of udev than needed. I solved it by using a package USE flag that prevents this dependency (-v8i or something like that). But next there is a problem with metacity, which is masked. jochen@localhost:~$ sudo emerge -uavDN @world These are the packages that would be merged, in order: Calculating dependencies... done! 20. Weird issue with libtool?

I'm finding a few packages that don't build and I keep trying to find work-arounds, change USE flags, or whatever, and now I'm seeing some that look like the ebuild is passing information to libtool incorrectly. Something is really broken, and this is still a fresh install (more or less - not booted it yet, just installing). layman wants to pull in svn (tired or arguing and accepting defaults). The result: checking for C compiler default output file name... a.out 000/image//usr/lib64/apache2/modules /usr/share/build-1/libtool --mode=install install mod_dav_svn.la /var/tmp/portage/dev-vcs/subversion-1.8.10-r1000/image//usr/lib64/apache2/modules/ /usr/share/build-1/libtool: 3222: /usr/share/build-1/libtool: install_prog+=install: not found /usr/share/build-1/libtool: 3242: /usr/share/build-1/libtool: files+= mod_dav_svn.la: not found libtool: install: you must specify an install program libtool: install: Try `libtool --help --mode=install' for more information. apxs:Error: Command failed with rc=65536 . build-outputs.mk:976: recipe for target 'install-mods-shared' failed make: *** [install-mods-shared] Error 1 * ERROR: dev-vcs/subversion-1.8.10-r1000 failed (install phase): * emake failed This looks all wrong. Any ideas?
  21. grub-mkimage crashes, can't install

I investigated as to why my grub wouldn't install when it looked like the compile was OK. Now emerging GDB and also attempting to re-emerge with different CFLAGS (just -O2, removing -march=native). Taro build-pc # ./grub-mkimage --help Usage: grub-mkimage [OPTION...] [OPTION]... [MODULES] Make a bootable image of GRUB. -c, --config=FILE embed FILE as an early config Segmentation fault (core dumped) What's weird is it should just be printing some output. That shouldn't crash it unless there is a major bug. Well ... it installed. Is there some way to tell portage to change CFLAGS for a certain program? Is there an /etc/portage/package.cflags? I know the ebuilds can do it, but the ebuild isn't filtering out -march=native, which is definately breaking grub (like a bug somewhere). I'm gonna compile the broken one, just so I can gdb it. Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault. 0x000000000041459a in memset () (gdb) bt #0 0x000000000041459a in memset () #1 0x0000000000414672 in memset () #2 0x0000000000414672 in memset () #3 0x0000000000414672 in memset () #4 0x0000000000414672 in memset () This repeats until the stack overflows ... at least 10000 times. Weird eh? I think its related to this GCC bug: https://gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=56888 It looks like even gcc's own test suite caches the bug and yet they released it anyway :/ Only bites with -O3 when doing something like that looks like a memcopy. GCC will optimize by calling the library routine which can result in an infinite loop. In which case you can fix the source with: #pragma GCC optimize ("no-tree-loop-distribute-patterns") Or just tweak the ebuild to add "-fno-tree-loop-distribute-patterns" to the CFLAGS in the ebuild and be done with it. Yup - this fixes it! Off to file a bug. (and keeping that -fno-tree-loop-... in my global CFLAGS, who knows what other apps will silently fail - I should probably recompile EVERYTHING).
  22. error installing ati-drivers

Portage displays an error when trying to install ati-drivers, but I am a newbie to *too Linux and my English is not well and I do not understand what is going on :( Output of emerge ati-drivers is: Calculating dependencies... done! ZFS support), without breaking it? I already removed udev and upower, and emerged eudev and upower-pm-utils. I am willing to remove all packages mentioned above, that seem to block the update process, and re-emerge them later. How wrong can it be to unmerge, for example, kdelibs?
