Hi, dear Funtoo users! XFCE 4.13-release available for testing. Currently not default and requires following steps to update. In /etc/ego.conf enable xfce-kit 4.13: [kits] xfce-kit = 4.13-release Followed by ego sync and emerge -auDN @world Log out and back into your desktop environment.
  3. I'll answer first so you get an idea. I play around with Funtoo on this desktop. I'm dual-booting until I become comfortable enough with it. Hopefully I'll become a Linux whiz sometime in the future. I also play around with programming, just python for now. The build is pretty simple: Mobo: MSI MS-7788 CPU: Intel Pentium G630 RAM: 4.00GB GPU: NVIDIA GTX650 In the future I hope to build a new more powerful desktop for faster compile times and such. This one is okay for now because I'm really just a beginner. I think it would be cool to have a list of working hardware builds with different use cases, listing how long it takes to do things like compile a kernel or commands like: emerge -auDN @world . :D

    Can't boot on my Funtoo

Yesterday night I performed a global upgrade of all my packages, noticed that it had genkernel updates included. The system upgraded nice and clean. I was doing my work while it worked. Turned off my PC after a depclean. But it seems that I had to eselect and boot-update the new kernel before doing that for now I can't boot to my OS anymore. Ok... Burned a System rescuecd 4.7.1 (the most recent on the install page). To try mounting my Funtoo installation directories and doing what I forgot last night. My problem is, everytime I boot this System rescuecd from my pen or any of the latest versions of it. I get at certain boot part of this cd what follows: 'Error: Cannot mount sysrcd.dat (none ....kernel details....)' and it gives me the basic terminal. (By the way, I'm currently having to use my Windows instalation, that's the only one that still works and burning the systemrescuecd with lili, (this kind of thing) is one of those situations that never gave any problem such as I reported... I'm stuck, for it never happened to me before. My computer hardware is very recent too. Can any of you guys possibly have an idea for me? Thanks in advance.

    Networking Help

Hello, I didn't really know where to post this question, since I've been using Funtoo for awhile, thus not an install question...and I'm unsure if this is a "desktop" question. I use funtoo on my personal laptop and would like to setup networking a little more robustly. I've read the Networking page (and after hours upon hours of confusion, realized exactly how different Funtoo is from Gentoo just by trying to set up a static ip) and IMHO the wiki page is a little lite on the topic of stacked runlevels and examples of use. It doesn't help that I know very little about networking, and have no clue what 95% of these words mean :( I would like to configure my machine so that if an ethernet cable is plugged in it takes higher priority over all other connections and the wifi automatically stops its connection. If an ethernet cable is not present, the wifi stays enabled and works as you'd normally expect, and giving the ability to connect to scan and connect to other networks. Also, with one last constraint...whenever connected to my home network, I use a fixed static IP address, regardless of wired or wifi connection. To add even more to this...eventually, I'd like to add VPN and different user tools to easily switch between servers. (Actually, I'm already able to do this part...with current setup). How should I go about doing this? Could I please get some guidance? Maybe this is a tough question, perhaps we can figure it out together :D . Also, if I get this figured out...I plan on writing an tutorial about the set up. Any insight would be much appreciated. Thanks, Rick

    GDM starts in off screen

Hi everybody, i need help with the next problem: when i start my funtoo system with Gnome 3 (i use openrc) everything works well except for GDM, it starts in off screen; is initially shown as expected only for a second and a second later it goes to off screen and i have to move the mouse or to hit any key to see anything again. So after moving the mouse GDM is back, but now is shown with the damn screenshield. After this i can remove the screen shield and login so i guess is not a big problem, but i'm tired of that situation every time i power on my computer. Thanks in advance! Note:-----> this issue is presented as well when the session is closed, so it happens in every session change
  8. I recently installed funtoo, and I'm having trouble emerging gnome-shell. It brings dev-lang/spidermonkey-24.2.0, and polkit requires version 1.8.5. When I try to install version 24, everything compiles successfully, but it tries to overwrite the config files for the old version. If I unmerge version 1.8, it will let me install version 24, but it complains about polkit missing it's dependency after any portage command is run. When I try to emerge gnome-shell with spidermonkey-24, everything works untill dev-libs/gjs is pulled in, which fails to compile (probably because I'm missing polkit). Is there any way around this?
  9. Hello everybody! after six years using Linux distributions like fedora and sabayon , finally i decided to move to a really serious distro. I was researching on what kind of meta-distro must be installed on my computer and i really really liked the funtoo way for linux since the first time i meet the welcome page in funtoo.org, ,,, anyway, i was wondering on how to install the Mate environment over my new stage 3 tarball and brand new compiled kernel already installed on my hard drive. First i take a look to http://www.funtoo.org/MATE_Desktop, but when i needed to do the following step: cp /usr/portage/sets/mate /etc/portage/sets suddenly the things went very dark... the '/usr/portage/sets/mate' doesn't exist on my installation, i decided to install Mate following the little guide provided by the gentoo wiki (http://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/MATE), after that, finally i can run the mate desktop by 'startx' , but to be honest, the desktop really sucks balls, it lack a lot of things that usally i need: doesn't mount any kind of media, doesn't have network manager, there are no sound, even i don't know how to set up the time. So, how to correctly install the Mate environment?? or how to complete the installation of the very minimal 'mate-base/mate' desktop. I really appreciate any information or any help . Thanks!
