  1. @cardinal, yup. That is exactly the right answer, in the news. I Did the gcc-config 1' (did I unmerge the older gcc?, I know I thought about it with trepidation). I also did the revdep-rebuild, but with no arg, since I saw it somewhere and know it fixes things. Nothing like the hard way of an amateur.
  2. From config.log in /var/tmp/portage/sys-devel/gcc-5.3.0-r1/work/objdir: Locke objdir # cat config.log This file contains any messages produced by compilers while running configure, to aid debugging if configure makes a mistake. Thanks, James! emerge seems to be working now. Dang, that was terrifying. I almost know what I'm doing sorta.
  3. I could not run epro, then I set eselect for python to python 3.4. It was on python 3.3, and maybe I did that, not sure. I have been studying the python language. So I got epro to work, if it matters, by changing the python 3.X to 3.4. My gcc seems to be royally screwed, per the 'no gcc found' message in second code segment next. Panic setting in. 4. You have both operating systems on your macbook, right? I presume you have all the partitions for both. I am not sure how different telling Grub to boot would be from a plain linux booted by Grub [2 or Legacy]. The newest mac operating systems are linux-based, but I have never worked with it. Using Grub2 or Grub Legacy per the online documentation from Gnu (or info grub at the command line) is distinct from using Funtoo's boot-update per the manpages via 'man boot.conf' and 'man boot-update'. I would look at the files in the partition for the boot of your mac OS and see if there is any plausible correspondence to a regular linux boot. I can only guess since I have never had a mac, but since no one else has answered, maybe my attempt is better than nothing. Grub allows you to manually try things. Maybe you type 'c' for a command line and 'e' to (temporarily?) edit a Grub menu line. You could experiment that way maybe.

  6. I put this out into the ether. I tried the latest acpid today, which is acpid-2.0.28-r1, on 10 January 2017. Just like plain acpid-2.0.28, its revision one triggers a Funtoo Gnu/Linux suspension on my Sony VAIO laptop on lid close. I never had the suspend actually work before, so there's the silver lining. Still, I only get correct behavior with acpid-2.0.23. Is there a better choice than acpid?

  8. I can only report the behavior of my one funtoo installation on my Sony VAIO laptop. I did not intensionally test your fix. I did an update and then the suspend would happen on every lid close. The roll back gets me the normal behavior for lid close. I don't know the particulars. All I did was update (emerge -ua acpid) with and without adding to /etc/portage/package.mask the (uncommented) line `=sys-power/acpid-2.0.28'. I just installed one version of acpid and tried the lid close, then I installed the other and tested the lid close. The result was entirely dependent on which version of acpid was installed. I changed nothing else to get the contrast in the funtoo response to closing the lid. I know less than you about how funtoo works, and I don't have anything more to add. Other people's results may vary. Sometimes I have a Sony VAIO driver issue that others do not have, at least that is how I explain to myself problems for which I can't find documentation or description from searching the Web. I think the fix broke the function of funtoo for me. That's all I can suggest with any confidence. If it is not causing the same problem for others, I can't explain it. Perhaps my install is different somehow? 9. Oleg, I tested it. My laptop suspends when I close the lid whether running Xwindows or not. I close the lid, it suspends. I rolled back to acpid-2.0.23 and it will only suspend if I use the suspend button with the logout options in xfce. Nice.
  10. The problem was package sys-power/acpid-2.0.28. I rolled back from that to sys-power/acpid-2.0.23 based on reading Oleg Vinichenko's help on the issue "GNOME: no power manager utility or lid close trigger" for speedytux. Maybe this link will work still: http://forums.funtoo.org/topic/1036-gnome-no-power-manager-utility-or-lid-close-trigger/ . At least know for the first time that my suspend function works. The hibernate function just turns off my laptop faster than normal. I guess that's how it didn't work right when I first installed funtoo. Cheers.
  11. GOAL: I am hoping someone can give me an idea on what I can change or investigate to solve a new behavior problem with my laptop. ISSUE: I have a Sony Vaio laptop that boots from Grub Legacy to Funtoo (usually) or to Windows 7 (rarely). I have this new behavior of suspension or hibernation when I close my laptop lid. The solid green lighting associated with the power button becomes flashing orange. I have to create a device input signal (I typically press a modifier key of the keyboard) to get it to wake up, then in a few seconds the screen goes black, the suspension is on again, and soon the flashing orange will resume. I provide user input a second time and then I have control over my laptop again, until I close the lid with the thing on. The suspend or hibernation (not sure which, never did work right on purpose) stops portage from updating my @world, etc. Annoying. I have the laptop plugged in to good AC power. CIRCUMSTANCES: This new behavior started after I used Windows 7 about 5 days ago and let some updates run for a day until I shut it off, cleanly I think, with a normal shutdown from the start button menu, but not only after that. More lately I've made changes/updates with portage to my Funtoo. I checked the BIOS settings on boot up and see nothing that could account for new behavior or control it. It should be the case, I think, that the new behavior in Funtoo with lid closing has nothing to do with Windows updates on other partitions of the same internal laptop HD. FAILED APPROACHES: (1) I tried downgrading and I tried removing app-laptop/laptop-mode-tools. I rebooted to be sure. No change. (2) There is nothing in the H20 BIOS to set differently. (3) I tried booting with my older vanilla-sources kernels. No change. (4) Using xfce4. Nothing to set with the setting manager that will fix this, as far as I know. Under Power Manager I switched from 'Lock screen' on close to simply 'Switch off display' on close. No change in problem. I can't think of anything else to try except letting Sony Vaio software continue updating my computer with Windows 7. No telling how long that would take after all these years. I have no idea what in Funtoo I can downgrade that might resolve this issue.
  12. I noticed the same output. After the initial shock of trying to 'fix' it, I settled on the idea that the new output is a new normal. You don't have your computer on the Internet, so the domain of your hostname is quite unknown. I don't think that is a problem. Maybe one of the developers forgot to configure the domain on his computer and created the message which is not so pertinent to many of us. I notice the same thing every time I stop Xwindows. The last message is (I think) a spurious problem with my xscreensaver: These guys make this stuff for the passion of it. It beats being made what to do by Windows.
  13. I don't understand you description, but I'll guess. As far as I know, if you are in X Windows and using xterm or xfce4-terminal, the terminal emulator window will automatically scroll down to show new output each time it is displayed. Maybe you can try several terminal emulators and find one that locks to a position. With xfce4-terminal (that I use with the xfce4 desktop) I have edit > preferences... > general > scrolling > checkbox for scroll on output. I never tried unchecking it, but that sort of thing may be what you want. I notice that my screensaver does not automatically show the login prompt when I open my laptop. I just hit a modifier key alone (cntrl or shift) to see the prompt to unlock the screen. I have a power manager that has a setting for locking the screen or not if the lid is closed. I am not sure what you mean in your reference to xscreensaver. I don't know why you want to load or unload kernel modules. Maybe you mean to include a kernel module with your kernel setup (maybe using genkernel not emerge). I don't know why you would not be looking for a portage package to include desktop goodies/add-ons (i.e. http://goodies.xfce.org).If it is not in the portage tree, you probably don't want it. Good luck!
  14. I am using sys-kernel/genkernel-3.4.40.7-r6:0, which is exactly what I can get. Not sure what the old behavior was. I'm not sure of anything with computer admin. It seems that if I run: genkernel --kernel-config=.config-0 --menuconfig all and if I make some changes via the menu to the kernel configuration and save the configuration as: config-1 then, it seems to me, after I exit the configuration menu w/o more menu changes the .config is a copy of .config-0 and not .config-1. I had thought that my menu changes would be part of the kernel about to be compiled, but it seems to not be the case. It seems the original configuration from the file specified by --kernel-config is used regardless. Is that actually happening and if so, is that appropriate? BTW, the funtoo documentation on compiling a kernel is really clear. So is the install documentation. Thank you. Bonus question: know why my desktop settings get screwed up from compiling a new kernel to the same old kernel names under same old /boot? If that is the case. I have no idea. I don't understand how anyone can like making a linux distro and do it this well. The learning curve has spots without adequate documentation that are unique singleton show stoppers. (After two days trying to get clock="local" in /etc/conf.d/hwclock to work, I gave in and did clock="UTC"; can't remember the last time I booted the eeky Wyndoz.) Anyway, I'm more careful now by running genkernel twice just to get the .config I want (and I could use make menuconfig but I now have an affinity with genkernel, especially since my attempt with raw make did not mount, and not investigating either, need to solve the intermitent exit Xorg/desktop dark screen lockup and get eth0 as a backup to wlan0 and then work on my computer lol). Bonus, bonus: I think it is bizarre that the ethernet driver Realtek 8168 comes as package r8168 and the (newer?) driver Realtek 8169 is available in the kernel configuration. Maybe politics? Maybe the package driver is not good enough in quality to be in the kernel? I'm gonna give it a try. dmesg is happy with r8168, (which required that I get rid of 8169 for real, or at least according to /usr/src/linux/.config that had to be there) and that's as far I as am right now. Best wishes to you in the new year!
  15. Struggling forward. Got the world to update. No sound and genkernel does not get my file for --config=file and I don't know what. Anywho, the previous problems are gone or transmogrified. I unmasked several python versions and masked libplist1.12 and 1.11-r2, and firefox-43.0 which crashes for me. When I log out of Xwindows the screen is on and all black and I must reboot manually. Thanks for looking, everyone. Happy New Year.
  16. The B block on eselect-python required that I unmask and oneshot python2 and python3 versions (I chose the lowest that would clear) and the new eselect-python. I don't know why the masking of python is so heavy. I may have made progress or just made a better mess. I got reasonably far with updating @system. I am stuck on the package libplist-1.12 (I tried both 1.12 and 1.11-r2 and got the same results). checking consistency of all components of python development environment... no configure: error: Could not link test program to Python. 19. I looked and looked, but I can't find documentation on the group 'video' or any documentation on a list of groups with descriptions. Rather maddening. This possible solution will at least be easy to try. List your groups with the command: groups Maybe one of them is 'video'. If not, maybe you need to make that group, but I am not sure. List the members of the video group: groupmems -lg video If the username w/o root privileges is not there, maybe it needs to be there? To add to test it out: groupmems -g video -a <username> For further info, if you did not know, try running 'dmesg' and also 'less /var/log/Xorg.0.log'.

(https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-1035254.html), exact same issue with me before I added stuff to package.mask and package.use.force. The part that might be new in start of blocking error message is: "<app-admin/eselect-1.4.5 ("<app-admin/eselect-1.4.5" is blocking sys-devel/binutils-config-5-r1, sys-devel/binutils-config-5-r2)". It may be because, besides adding lines to package.mask, I added to package.use.force hoping that would be the funtoo equivalent to the gentoo solution at the linked webpage. The solution there without explanation as to why it worked is (not in my English): in your /etc/portage/package.accept_keywords/package.keywords wrote: =app-eselect/eselect-python-20151117-r1 ~amd64 dev-lang/python:2.7 Added following to package.use.force without obvious effect on portage package selection or dependency resolution. that this is an architecture problem of the linue distribution inputs. Does waiting for portage tree updates seem a likely solution or am I uniquely screwed? I don't know what more relevant info I can provide. Scroll blindness is no solution for either of us. At this point I wonder if I should just copy a whole new portage tree image per the install workaround (as it used to be as I recall) and build a new @world from that. If you have good advice on what to try or not try, I could use it. Thanks for reading. Happy holidays. Get off the computer. ;)
  21. Thanks for link Oleg. I was getting close to posting a question about why I have oracle-jdk-bin 1.8 masked. I wasn't sure I did not do it to myself. :)
  22. I'm guessing what you want is the 'eselect' command. Try 'eselect' with no args and look at output, then try 'eselect java-vm' and look at output, then try 'eselect java-vm list' and look at output. If you are lucky, the number you want will be there for 'eselect java-rm set <#>'. I was using icedtea not so long ago and the BDFL counseled me to use oracle and then everything was fine. Yah, I like the opensource stuff culturally. Now if I only knew why my jre 1.8 is masked (equery l -p jre), not that I've put in the time yet to figure it out, but it did bring me to this thread.
  23. Thought of something else. I don't know what you know or don't, do or don't do. Maybe this helps someone. This is what I do to make sure the kernel source code is matched at update/compile time to the kernel I will be running after the update of @world. Maybe there is an incomplete update in your system because it is in the portage tree. It can take a while for drivers or kernels to get updated to match each other (as far as I know). I have had issues that take two major kernel versions to get magically resolved. A hardware-specific driver does not get the same attention as other things that are more generic and widely used, whether that drive updates first and breaks the kernel code or the kernel is updated and breaks the driver code. I like to update my @world only after and immediately after I update my kernel sources and compile with no problems. After I update my portage tree (emerge --sync), I put or change a 'version lock' on my kernel before I update and compile kernel source (then @world) with a line in my file /etc/portage/package.mask. (I think that could be a directory sometimes, but not for me at least.) I add something like this: ##Lock the kernel source and update only if will point to ##correct source of running kernel to keep ABI sync with ##emerge of dependent X Windows drivers good. >sys-kernel/vanilla-sources-3.18.5 So how do I know what version is the latest? I check for a kernel update: equery l -p vanilla-sources. (Note equery is part of the package gentoolkit. Also, the portage tree queried by equery must be updated by emerge --sync to ever change.) XXX me # equery l -p vanilla-sources * Searching for vanilla-sources ... [-P-] [ ] sys-kernel/vanilla-sources-3.2.65:3.2.65 [-P-] [ ] sys-kernel/vanilla-sources-3.4.105:3.4.105 [-P-] [ ] sys-kernel/vanilla-sources-3.10.63:3.10.63 [-P-] [ ] sys-kernel/vanilla-sources-3.12.35:3.12.35 [-P-] [ ] sys-kernel/vanilla-sources-3.14.27:3.14.27 [-P-] [ ] sys-kernel/vanilla-sources-3.17.7:3.17.7 [IP-] [ ] sys-kernel/vanilla-sources-3.18.1:3.18.5 XXX me # eselect kernel list Available kernel symlink targets: [1] linux-3.16.2-keeping [2] linux-3.18.5-keeping * XXX me # Initially, the installed kernel sources will be in a directory like '/usr/src/linux-3.18.5' . I rename the directory with a '-keeping' suffix so my --depclean (-c) will not remove it. (Sometimes adding a trailing slash to a directory name is sometimes necessary to make a few command-line tools happy in certain situations.) I also immediately update the symbolic link /usr/src/linux to point to the newly installed kernel source code BEFORE I update @world and even before I compile a new kernel (with genkernel). If I have problems with the new kernel and/or @world update, I role back the kernel config line in package.mask AND the symbolic link '/usr/src/linux'. You can use something like 'ln -s <target_dir> linux' but why not use eselect? After eselect kernel list, eselect kernel set <#> to point to correct kernel source code. If I am pointing to a new kernel source, then I copy my latest .config-the-kernel type file to the new kernel source directory and rarely update it (using the --menuconfig option when I run genkernel). Usually, I only change kernel config settings (after initial setup that takes painful experiment) because of a message when I update using emerge, or as a desperate guess for some admin issue (but wild guessing can do more harm than good). Then I let genkernel build the kernel files and put them in the boot directory. Eventually, I move oldest kernels (3 files each) from my boot kernel directory to a subdirectory (to delete later). I leave one (or more if some wierd issue) of the least old working kernels for Grub2. I run boot-update to make a new os menu for bootup. I might reboot to the new kernel at this point. Check the kernel you are using with 'uname -a' if you like. After all that, I update @world with the correct kernel source code available for any kernel drivers and any other system software code (I think) to compile based on what's in the kernel source directory (to which I have the symbolic link pointing). As I wrote in previous comment, I coud next use 'emerge @X11-modules-rebuild' sometimes to get X windows drivers to be in sync (proper Abstract Binary Interface or ABI). Probably that is only useful immediately after compiling a new kernel, but I always like to update the whole @world. Also, per the emerge @world output, I might use emerge @preserved-rebuild. Other emerge sets per emerge --list-sets may be useful at times. If you can't get things to work after all that with total matching between kernel code and remaining world code (or at least X Window drivers), go to your package.mask config file and limit yourself to the kernel version you did have working (or want to try, portage tree package versions get pruned, but that's why I save kernel code), and reset to kernel source pointer link to the old source (you might have protected by renaming) using eselect kernel set <#>. Then maybe reboot to the old kernel that is still there, right? Then update your @world (with the newer kernel versions appropriately masked per your configuration; older ones will not be used, but you could use '=' rather than '>' for the mask line). Hopefully, you can recover what you had before if you can't get the update to the latest to work. When I reboot my system, I go to the command line, a bunch of virtual terminals: X Windows is not running. I always start X Windows manually by startx and I can go to the virtual console where it is running and kill it with control-C. I switch around with alt-F# (and cntrl if in X Windows desktop). I think there is a way to boot up as admin with no X Windows using the correct 'runlevel'. I don't know how to do that. I just manually start and stop X Windows. I like the control. Sucks to try and troubleshoot X Windows when it gets stuck by being started automatically on bootup. I hope that helps.
  24. This is the short version of what I just typed and lost. Try emerge @X11-modules-rebuild. Get all target sets via emerge --list-sets (or --list-set). If that does not work, use the Xorg.log file for hints. There is the DRM invalid arg (but maybe that is in compiled code not your config stuff). There is also the hints from the GPU error about a kernel log(?) and the ReadMe file. Need to update Xorg config file? Hardware issue? If the @X11-modules-rebuild does not work, could be a tough admin problem. Good luck!
  25. I recall having this issue too. My problem was like what sputnik said. I had to look for about 10 minutes to find where I configured the fix. I don't know about editing the config files in /sys/bus/... I will assume you have not figured it out since you did not add [solved] to the title (using full editor on original comment). Assuming you did not screw anything up by 'fixing' things, and assuming you have the same issue I did, you, gevious, will have this corrected in 5 minutes. It will take me longer to discover what I did and explain the steps. lol Step 1: Verify you are using laptop-mode-tools package. me@XXX ~ $ emerge -s laptop-mode Searching... [ Results for search key : laptop-mode ] [ Applications found : 1 ] * app-laptop/laptop-mode-tools Latest version available: 1.66 Latest version installed: 1.66 Size of files: 108 kB Homepage: http://www.samwel.tk/laptop_mode/ Description: Linux kernel laptop_mode user-space utilities License: GPL-2 me@XXX ~ $ If app-laptop/laptop-mode-tools is NOT installed, these steps will NOT fix your problem, so abort. If app-laptop/laptop-mode-tools IS installed, these steps will (probably) fix your problem, so please continue. Step 2: Find the configurate option(s) where your mouse is being managed to save power. Run less to look at your config file: me@XXX ~ $ less /etc/laptop-mode/conf.d/usb-autosuspend.conf This is the top of mine. # # Configuration file for Laptop Mode Tools module usb-autosuspend. # # For more information, consult the laptop-mode.conf(8) manual page. # ############################################################################### # USB autosuspend settings # ------------------------ # #__COMMENT If you enable this setting, laptop mode tools will automatically enable the #__COMMENT USB autosuspend feature for all devices. #__COMMENT #__COMMENT NOTE: Some USB devices claim they support autosuspend, but implement it in a #__COMMENT broken way. This can mean keyboards losing keypresses, or optical mice turning #__COMMENT their LED completely off. If you have a device that misbehaves, add its USB ID #__COMMENT to the blacklist below and complain to your hardware vendor. # ################################################################################ # Enable debug mode for this module # Set to 1 if you want to debug this module DEBUG=0 # Enable USB autosuspend feature? # Set to 0 to disable CONTROL_USB_AUTOSUSPEND="0" # Set this to use opt-in/whitelist instead of opt-out/blacklist for deciding # which USB devices should be autosuspended. # AUTOSUSPEND_USE_WHITELIST=0 means AUTOSUSPEND_*_BLACKLIST will be used. # AUTOSUSPEND_USE_WHITELIST=1 means AUTOSUSPEND_*_WHITELIST will be used. Use lsusb to find out the # IDs of your USB devices. # Example: AUTOSUSPEND_USBID_BLACKLIST="046d:c025 0123:abcd" ##AUTOSUSPEND_USBID_BLACKLIST="" AUTOSUSPEND_USBID_BLACKLIST="046d:c52f" Note the two key lines that I am unable to made bold within the monospace block above on the final output: CONTROL_USB_AUTOSUSPEND="0" AUTOSUSPEND_USBID_BLACKLIST="046d:c52f" Apparently, I am being redundant, but also robust and documented. Step 3: Get your device identifier for your mouse using the USB port. I'm guessing the devide id trick did not exactly work right for me, but maybe it will for you. The config file tells you what manpage gives your more info and the command to get the usb device id. Here is how to get the id. me@XXX ~ $ lsusb Bus 002 Device 003: ID 046d:c52f Logitech, Inc.
