Hi, adcdam, I'm not experienced in the internal fontconfig, but here's a link that helped me few times: http://kev009.com/wp/2009/12/getting-beautiful-fonts-in-gentoo-linux/ I hope this will somehow solve your issue. After emerging those fonts, just restart your X and let me know if it helped. :) Good luck.
