  1. I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to portage, but I'd actually recommend avoiding funtoo profiles if you want a light install. I think they only modify your USE flags and possibly unmask a few packages. When I used profiles I found a few USE flags that I didn't need; the X11 mix-in mix in bought in support for joysticks and other uncommon hardware. I just glance over a few of the possible flags for packages and add the ones I think I need to my make.conf.

Again, I know very little about portage and there's a very good chance that what I just said is wrong...

Also, I'd recommend the i3 tiling window manager. It's extremely lightweight, and although there's a bit of a learning curve I've found it to be quite powerful.

  2. Whenever I boot into funtoo, my wifi will only connect for about 2 seconds until losing connection and reconnecting, but I haven't had that problem on the other network I've connected to. Just so you know, I have the problem no matter how strong my signal is. I'm using networkmanager to manage my connections, and I havent edited any config files regarding networking, and my wifi card is a "Qualcomm Atheros QCA9565 / AR9565 Wireless Network Adapter (rev 01)"

My home wifi has the interface wlp5s0, and is encrypted with a wpa psk passphrase. My network supplier is Uverse, if that's any use to anyone.

The other wifi has the interface wlan0 (I'm pretty sure) and I don't know how it's secured, but I needed a passwork to connect. The owner said that's it's very "open" , although I'm not sure what that's supposed to mean. None of these networks are hidden, by the way.

  3. I oneshotted speex, and the compile worked. I was given a lot of errors, but the compile seemed to work. Can someone tell me if these are bad?

shell-init: error retrieving current directory: getcwd: cannot access parent directories: No such file or directory
shell-init: error retrieving current directory: getcwd: cannot access parent directories: No such file or directory
job-working-directory: error retrieving current directory: getcwd: cannot access parent directories: No such file or directory
chdir: error retrieving current directory: getcwd: cannot access parent directories: No such file or dire

There were many similar errors, and the compile took a very long time.

  4. I just switched to funtoo, and I'm curious about the repository differences. What I've heard is that the funtoo repository is similar to the gentoo testing repository, but it uses more stable internals. How bleeding edge is the funtoo repository compared to gentoo testing? What counts as an internal package, is it any command-line utility, or system-vital packages? And finally, how up to date are the internal packages when compared to, say, gentoo stable?

  5. When I try to run the ./configure command, it fails after checking things. The last 2 lines are

    checking for LIBSPEEX... no
configure: error: *** speex support not found

When I remove --with-speex, I am told that I should always use speex support.

And here is the rest of the relevant info:

  8. The rule for swap space used to be that you needed twice your ram, but with 2 gigabytes you can have less. I am currently following that rule although I have 8 gigabytes. It may seem a bit overkill, but considering how large hard drives are nowadays, it's not like I'm going to run out of space anytime soon. Even if you only have a 50 gigabyte hardvdrive, I'd recommend following the twice your ram rule, because that way you know that you will have more than enough swap space, and you would be using less than a tenth of your storage space.

  9. I recently installed funtoo, and I'm having trouble emerging gnome-shell. It brings dev-lang/spidermonkey-24.2.0, and polkit requires version 1.8.5. When I try to install version 24, everything compiles successfully, but it tries to overwrite the config files for the old version. If I unmerge version 1.8, it will let me install version 24, but it complains about polkit missing it's dependency after any portage command is run. When I try to emerge gnome-shell with spidermonkey-24, everything works untill dev-libs/gjs is pulled in, which fails to compile (probably because I'm missing polkit). Is there any way around this?
