In menuconfig, there is a potion to append local version to version string. I change this every time I modify my kernels... uname -r says 3.17.3-ck-CreekBuild-1. You can also patch the kernel name any way you want.

This is my simple setup with my beloved Xmonad. I had to add the screenfetch info up top, I hope you like it. I will add some Conky or dzen2 soon.
