using of "p" option is shown in above command how do you see it now shown in tar xpf? maybe you confused with "p" and "-p"? Your problem is not really related to unpacking of tarball, if you used tar xpf, you are fine. What were your steps before getting this boot failure.
yes, more RAM will fix this. As said, chromium on 64-bit systems during compilation exceeding 2Gb(and there is no 32 bit version from upstream anymore).
you can by-pass this by:
I_KNOW_WHAT_I_AM_DOING="1" emerge chromium
however during compilation system calls exceeds 2GB on 64 bit for chromium, so it may surely fail. Yes, binary version could be an alternative.
