Ciao :)

Damn, by accident I realized adherent of new profiles about architetura cpu. These should be replacement of * FLAGS in make.conf?
ci74771ht ~ # eselect profile list

The mine was only a question for now .... since *BSD kernels doesn't support all my hardware for now cause it is fairly recent hardware (FreeBSD kernel does not see my integrated ethernet card .....)
I love Funtoo !!!
But i've plesure to make experience with other type of OS .... :) so my question (and for me is a "type of game" ..... :) )
As a person I know, and that is much better than me about Linux / BSD, I wanted to hear an opinion on your part.
Because I believe that with Funtoo can do everything and more (perhaps with difficulty).
However, the possibility remains; and this is what I want to understand.
All this because when a person asks me that OS install, first ask cpu, RAM and videocard.
If th architecture of PC is too "old" well do not tell Funtoo install, although it will always be easier to T2 Linux or LFS / BLFS or Slackware (most people tell that is no difficult..... but for me is 10000 times simply use Funtoo or Gentoo with the power of Portage :P), but recommend a precompiled, unless it is "fixed" like me on the superiority of Portage: P.Now I must make some works with my loved Funtoo system ........ Then i'd like to make experience to create a Funtoo BSD if possible :)
Ciao :)

Hi...... it is possible to attempt to make a Funtoo winth FreeBSD kernel (like as Gentoo/FreeBSD) ?
-
Thanx: ok !
at first
# euse -E emerald unsupported -p compiz-fusion
Then
emerge compiz-fusion fusion-icon
At this step i must unmask some ebuilds (using --autounmask-write)
So .... etc-update & -5 to accept all changes. Then I remake the emerge compiz-fusion fusion icon:
ci74771ht ~ # emerge compiz-fusion fusion-icon
Calculating dependencies... done!
The following keyword changes are necessary to proceed:
(see "package.accept_keywords" in the portage(5) man page for more details)
# required by x11-wm/emerald-0.9.5
# required by x11-wm/compiz-fusion-0.8.8[emerald]
# required by compiz-fusion (argument)
=x11-themes/emerald-themes-0.5.2 ~amd64
Use --autounmask-write to write changes to config files (honoring
CONFIG_PROTECT). Carefully examine the list of proposed changes,
paying special attention to mask or keyword changes that may expose
experimental or unstable packages.
emerge: there are no ebuilds built with USE flags to satisfy ">=x11-wm/compiz-0.8.8[gconf?]".
!!! One of the following packages is required to complete your request:
- x11-wm/compiz-0.9.12::gentoo (Missing IUSE: gconf)
- x11-wm/compiz-0.9.11::gentoo (Missing IUSE: gconf)
(dependency required by "x11-plugins/compiz-plugins-extra-0.8.8" [ebuild])
(dependency required by "x11-wm/compiz-fusion-0.8.8" [ebuild])
(dependency required by "compiz-fusion" [argument])Then I've unmasked also emerald in packace.accept_keywords.
I obtain this:
ci74771ht ~ # emerge compiz-fusion fusion-iconCalculating dependencies... done! emerge: there are no ebuilds built with USE flags to satisfy ">=x11-wm/compiz-0.8.8[gconf?]". !!! One of the following packages is required to complete your request: - x11-wm/compiz-0.9.12::gentoo (Missing IUSE: gconf) - x11-wm/compiz-0.9.11::gentoo (Missing IUSE: gconf) (dependency required by "x11-plugins/compiz-plugins-extra-0.8.8" [ebuild]) (dependency required by "x11-wm/compiz-fusion-0.8.8" [ebuild]) (dependency required by "compiz-fusion" [argument]) ci74771ht ~ #
Now, making :
ci74771ht ~ # USE="gconf" emerge -DNu world compiz-fusion fusion-icon -pv
i obtain :
These are the packages that would be merged, in order: Calculating dependencies... done! The following keyword changes are necessary to proceed: (see "package.accept_keywords" in the portage(5) man page for more details) # required by x11-plugins/compiz-plugins-unsupported-0.8.8 # required by x11-wm/compiz-fusion-0.8.8[unsupported] # required by compiz-fusion (argument) =x11-libs/compiz-bcop-0.8.8 ~amd64 emerge: there are no ebuilds built with USE flags to satisfy ">=x11-wm/compiz-0.8.8[gconf?]". !!! One of the following packages is required to complete your request: - x11-wm/compiz-0.9.12::gentoo (Missing IUSE: gconf) - x11-wm/compiz-0.9.11::gentoo (Missing IUSE: gconf) (dependency required by "x11-plugins/compiz-plugins-main-0.8.8" [ebuild]) (dependency required by "x11-plugins/compiz-plugins-unsupported-0.8.8" [ebuild]) (dependency required by "x11-wm/compiz-fusion-0.8.8[unsupported]" [ebuild]) (dependency required by "compiz-fusion" [argument])
It seems all related to the USE "gconf"
Thanx for the interest.

hi; I'm on "stable branch" using KDE & xfce4.
I'd like to use compiz with xfce4.
It is possible ? (cause i get various errors).
Thanks to All :)

hwmrocker : have you solved ? if not i'll try to comment temporarily the "RUBY_TARGETS="ruby21" and use the old version.
What tell to us:
eselect ruby list
?(Is possible that my idea is wrong)
Ciao :)

Thanks. Funtoo is awesome! :)
Is very "eclectic" and ingnious".... for me the best at
this time :)

[ot]
Excuse me aryvandaar, i hope not du distrb you.
I read sometimes http://www.gentoo.org/dyn/use-index.xml
Then for You may be a good idea ta add ffmpeg in "Global use flags" and the others in "local Use Flags" ?
Also gstreamer is a Global Use; in my make.conf there are both enabled globally. And my system is coerent.
[/ot]
Excuse me for this off topic ...... Thanks for any answwer :)
However, I use the "euse command". in this case should be
# euse -E ffmpeg
. Ciao an excuse me for the disturb :|
-
Great morphmex; I think to express its gratitude to be an incentive to develop a project or another.
I prefer to be a bit 'more "conservative" on certain aspects.
Well but if there are more choices then .... better.
Hello to All Dear Funtoo users :)
(Fun-too .... Fan(tastic)-too => too fantastic: P: P: P: P: P)
Thanks to All.
With estimate.
Sandro.

I'm very very happy that You've solved this trouble :) :) :)
-
1) Update make.conf:
# emerge app-portage/cpuinfo2cpuflags
Run:
# cpuinfo2cpuflags
Then update your CPU_FLAGS_X86 (cause I think that there are also mmxext (native in Athlon but renamed in Intel's cpu, such as sse3 are named PNI ("Prescott new Instructions))
Then You're core2 is precedent of "Penryn" family that supports also sse4.1
If you want try also
grep sse4 /proc/cpuinfo
to be sure that there aren't also sse4.1 streaming simd extensions.
For Other questions, mmm I use the "Stable branch" of portage.
Ciao :)

Could you post your.
$ eselect profile list
and tell to us what you want obtain :) ?
(e.g. : desktop type ecc.... )
Ciao :)
ps. I've seen an incoerence: -zlib .... zlib) I think that you must clear "-zilp" (this is only one little step). or if you want "prune them with
# euse -P zlib
But if you want (raccamandable)
# euse -E zlib
Hi :)

If you want i'll send to you my make.conf only for reflecting on this.

Thanks, a good way to promote our work: organize a workshop or a talk at your local LUG. You could be surprised of the interest. Here in Quebec city some friends did that but over several weeks and with an announced step-by-step agenda. More than 20 people attended the training session and this is how they made the Quebec city Gentoo/Funtoo community to be "on the map".
I'm very happy for your words.
I always try to do, "stalking" about Funtoo. But it seems that many have "fear" to venture into this "world".I have compiled Funtoo via ssh to some people; and a pair quickly became fans of this wonderful Sistoma Operative ...... indeed is more than an "Operating System".I in my facbeook I said many times: "anyone who wishes to follow it step by step to make him understand everything regarding the installation of the base system."I am not an expert, and I have to ask and learn so much more. But the approach of Acted is perfect in my opinion. Why .... is too eclectic and ingenious. Now I will call my friend Messana ..... I want to write his thoughts on this meta-distribution Fun-tastic: PHello and thanks !!!!!!![ot] I'm just an herbalist with a passion for computer science ....... and even part of its "Canadian Maple Syrup" :) :) :)Thanks yout my Heart......Sandro :) -
Dearest Daniel, well .... my friend Riccardo Messana and I are convinced that you were a big indeed great to want to engage with determination the project Funtoo !!!!
We think that Gentoo is a derivative of Funtoo .... and not vice versa.
Do you really value you so much for your work and your genius .........
You are invincible !!!!!!!!! Thank Heart throughout the work you do for this meta-distribution and to keep "alive" this "community".
With great esteem.
Alessandro & Riccardo. :)

Try:
# eselect ruby set 1
Then compile what you "want compile (with the --oneshot option)"
Then
# eselect ruby set 2

It seems a "sudoku" :DThanx -
I think that Funtoo is the best distribution.
LFS, T2 , are too complex. I think that is impossible for only one person to have a perfectly coherent system.
But Daniel has invented Portage that for me can be similar as an "expert system" :P Portage is Fun ......
Many distributions , in my opinion , to ease the difficulty setting Initials new users to GNU / Linux instead 're committing errors colossal . I speak of " Linux Mint and Fedora for example ."
What I hope Funtoo not want to invent solutions to simplify it installation. precisely because the "magic of Gen / Fun - too it is in teaching varoious characteristics of a GNU/Linux system.Slackware as an installer; but for me is difficult. IFor me are more simple to use stages & portage.
In this time i prefer windows 8.1 then some other distributions, cause in an attempt to simplify things with messages " pedantic " in my opinion lead to confusion.
Hopefully those who develop an environment Dessktop for example must make intelligible the whole thing .... and without too much information .
.... But apparently many distros you Are losing theirs in " nonsense " that does not lead anywhere except to abandon the GNU system.
I hope first for Funtoo can be more ' Fun ' is due to the introduction of features not convoluted but not trivial .
I do not know .... but various distributions gave me a great sense of reliability . but right now ..... for me Funtoo is my favorite . although i'll remove the debian sources (cause also the kernel configuration is an important didactic perspective).
Systems must be for me powerful and safe; Since 1985 I realized what it meant to have some instruction in most of the processor (from a 6502 to a 65C02 ) .
This is why I always try and luckily found Gentoo Funtoo and that thanks to the intelligence of Portage (which could become an " expert system " ) .
Performances and flexibilty ( and i think That only Portage is the perfect balance ) .
Why I do not know if other complex deployments have utilities like Fun or Gen - too .
Daniel invented for me the best system on the planet Earth. I hope.
Here we talk about " Pure Eclecticism " .
And I think that You're a genius and you're able to create new functionality.Too many simplifications i think is not ever the correct way. Your creation is a perfect compromise from apparently difficulties but real knoledge of that anyone can make.
Funtoo for me is already " Fun " enough . We do not bite off more than you can chew .
Otherwise is to fall and regress as the dozens of distributions " unnecessary " all based on " something else " .
If it does not exist anymore Funtoo ... well ... I would not use anything. May Be BSD. But .... wich system has utilties such as revdep-rebuild or the calculation of @preserved or @downgrade ?Portage is Your Jewel. Nobel for Portage :D
I started in 2009/2010 with Gentoo .
A little ' I read the guides , but .... even when I failed I WANTED to install Gentoo , and begin to understand the intrinsic mechanisms of a system. And for me is simply "The Best".
Wiith ssh conection i've installed 1 Gentoo and 1 Funtoo at 1100 Km of distance :D
However ... Thenk You with all my heart for your genius and your work.
Thank You Daniel. :)
Little example: My Funtoo boot up in 13 sec.
Fedora 21 boh 30 - 40 seconds.

ci74771ht ~ # lspci|grep -i vide 06:01.0 Multimedia controller: Philips Semiconductors SAA7131/SAA7133/SAA7135 Video Broadcast Decoder (rev d1)
In DVB mode works fine with "Kaffeine".
About "kernel-level configuration, there is all for this device":
ci74771ht ~ # zcat /proc/config.gz |grep SAA7134 CONFIG_VIDEO_SAA7134=m CONFIG_VIDEO_SAA7134_ALSA=m CONFIG_VIDEO_SAA7134_RC=y CONFIG_VIDEO_SAA7134_DVB=m
With Kaffeine in DVB mode de device works very fine.

The first thing that i make with a new PC is the complete memtest !!!
because in the past I've had several times troubles with Ram modules.
I've an assembled PC .
Here in Italy many retailers offers computers with "basic" kingston memories for show "low with prices" .
Instead I say NO !!!!! I want the hardware is good and have medium/great quality .
For example using Boinc ( 8 CPU + 1 x nvidia gpu ) the coretemps came to exceed 100 ? C : -o
Then I've bought a water cooler.
Using the system so exasperated ( Boinc , more compilation + Movies with XBMC ) , I do not see even a lost frame .
And I compile libreoffice in RAM ( 16GiB ) using / dev / shm .
My videocard is a MSI nvidia GTX 660 and also under intensive use so far I have not seen temperatures superior to 75 ? C .
Globally, thanks to water cooling Corsair H80i, either the gpu and cores ( i7 haswell ) do not exceed 75 ? C with Heavy Hard Load.
I could put a fan ( also 2 ) as substitutes for the case to dissipate better the hot "air in the case".And not only for ram, I test the quality using benchmarks cause if i don't have hardware stability,
it becomes difficult to understand whether hardware or software error .
Excuse my logorrhoea :)

Hi to All :)
I've encountered this message : Service `xdm' needs non existent service `openrc-settingsd'
Making these operations building a new system for a my friend:
ci74771ht ~ # ufw enable
Firewall attivo e abilitato all'avvio del sistema
ci74771ht ~ # rc-update add ufw
* service ufw added to runlevel default
ci74771ht ~ # rc
* Caching service dependencies ...
Service `xdm' needs non existent service `openrc-settingsd' [ ok ]
ufw | * Starting ufw ...
2 questions:
1) Why it is not a dipendence ?
2) it is necessary then I must emerge it (using --noreplace ?).
Thanks for any answer :)

I've an i7 "Haswell" 4771 and I use for all FLAGS (CFLAGS, CXXFLAGS, FFLAGS and FCFLAGS) : "-march=native -O2 -pipe"
To see the active flags i use this script:
echo 'int main(){return 0;}' > test.c && gcc -v -Q -march=native -O2 test.c -o test && rm test.c testIn a terminal
Then in another terminal
echo 'int main(){return 0;}' > test.c && gcc -v -Q -march=core-avx2 -O2 test.c -o test && rm test.c testThen with kate or gedit I can see simply the differences.
Same discussion was also for -march=core2 and -march=native; using -march=native, 2 o 3 flags or more are activated.
