  1. I think that about compiz there is nothing to do. I was a Gnome 2.6.x + compiz-fusion user.

The latest version that i tried was the 0.9.X in "ubuntu ultimate edition".

Now I use KDE at first with enabled various desktop effects.....

    Hello.

  2. [ot] this is an off-topic ...... but i want to tell about my thought:

Times ago I search for "bleedind edges softwares" :)

I'm started in may 2008 to use Linux with Fedora.

Once I've comprised some information about shell i'll search for a source-based system to have a really optimized system for my PC.

Then I falled in love with Gentoo..... Then Funtoo (reading the history of Gentoo, i've comprised that the Genius who invented Portage was Daniel :P ; such as "martial arts" I've found the master :) )

But Now I prefer to have a stable and affidable system. (really i've either "Stable and current" Funtoo ... to see the differencies of my preferred OS :P

but not necessary old packages (or ebuilds in our case) are better than new packages; the "pro" of old packages is that they are used and have most reports about their functionality.

There are more variables and a lot of "why" or "how" !

It seems like Bruce Lee when it invented the "Jeet Kune Do - Kung Fu" :D :D :D

    ecuse for my offf topic.

A friend of mine studied philosophy. Now, it creates customized Software for "Vittoria Assicurazioni" in Italy; but he use windows ......

And this friend tells to me that in the "world" of inphormatics are welcome persons that have studied Philosophy...... cause they are able to create high-level algorithms ....... (but it is necessary also the "technician" that is able to translate the High level language in low-level language (assembly).

If I'm wrong .... excuse me for this thought.

(and excuse for my non perfectly transparent US Language) :|

If i wrote with errors ... please cerrect me.

  3. Hi.

    from a 3 / 4 months, after using genkernel i must run a "make clean" in /usr/stc/linux.

This also if i use the --postclear or if i set (boolean) in genkernel.conf POSTCLEAR="1"

Once terminated, i've with df -h 26 GiB used in filesystem root

giving "make clean" df -h tell me:

Then 8 GiB of freed space.

I don't know how to think about this .... :|

excuse me and thank you for explanations.

    Hello to All :)
  4. Hi .... forgive me for my ignorance :(

I'd like to know how to solve this: for example:

    ci74771ht ~ # euse -P plasma
WARNING: 'portageq envvar PORTDIR' is deprecated. Use any of 'get_repos, get_repo_path, repos_config' instead.
WARNING: 'portageq envvar PORTDIR' is deprecated. Use any of 'get_repos, get_repo_path, repos_config' instead.
WARNING: 'portageq envvar PORTDIR' is deprecated. Use any of 'get_repos, get_repo_path, repos_config' instead.
WARNING: Use flag "plasma" is not set globally

which commands are necesary to not use "deprecated" ?

    Thanks.

  5. I'm trying to compilig it.

I'm on stable branch and I've unmasked the last version.

    I'obtain the follow:

     *   CONFIG_OPENVSWITCH:         should not be set. But it is.

    I've the 4.05 gentoo-sources.

    The result seems ok:

May be I've not comprised the question, cause You have added a -W (but -Wbla_bla_bla is relative about the Warnings).

    Uhm .... it seems a "rebus" :|

If You want I can make emperiments with my machine to try to aid You .... (but i'm only a "little penguin :|).

Good Evening from Italy for You :)

  6. Hi Astate, i hope not to bored You !

    but install

    # emerge eix

    then

    # eix-update

    or

    # eix-sync (that is equal to emerge --sync && eix-update)

So You can interrogate the eix db (that is faster than emerge -S (--search)

I think is a very nice utility.

If You want to use kde versions > kde 4.X

I thik You must use "layman"

    # emerge layman
    # layman -L
    # layman -a kde
    # echo "source /var/lib/layman/make.conf">> /etc/portage/make.conf

    then when you'll make

    # eix-update, it will be equal to
    # emerge --sync && layman -S

so you can re-interogate eix with

    # eix kde-meta
    # eix-kde-plasma

    and so on .....

Thiis are a normal prcedure; but it is possible that you encountered troubles. Now I'm making an experiment with these commands to give you a feedback.

mmmmh at this moment i have not found an overlay with KDE 5.X .

May be that i wrote, for you are jsut comprised.

Unfortunately I have not found overlays that have kde5.X
Perhaps what I wrote you know him already.

Sorry for not being able to give a solution. :(
  7. Hi to all; Today, i've encountered an issue abour euse.

    e.g. :

    cit4771ht ~ # euse -i png
    ERROR: /usr/portage/profiles/use.local.desc is not readable

In effect the file  /usr/portage/profiles/use.local.desc doesn't exist

    there is the file:  /usr/portage/profiles/use.desc

I have to wait for a new release of the various portage's utilities, or may be sufficient to create a simlink ?

    Thank You !!!!

    solved with

    Thank You very much   :)
  9. Hi; I make a copy of principal config files using a very simple script:

    sandro@ci74771ht ~ $ cat Scripts/Sync_config_files
    cat /etc/portage/make.conf > ~/Funtoo/make.conf
    cat /etc/portage/package.mask |grep -v "#"|sort > ~/Funtoo/package.mask
    cat /etc/portage/package.unmask |grep -v "#"|sort > ~/Funtoo/package.unmask
    cat /etc/portage/package.use |grep -v "#"|sort > ~/Funtoo/package.use
    cat /etc/portage/package.accept_keywords |grep -v "#"|sort > ~/Funtoo/package.accept_keywords
    cat /var/lib/portage/world > ~/Funtoo/World
    cat /etc/kernels/kernel-config-`uname -m`-`uname -r` > ~/Funtoo/kernel-config-`uname -m`-`uname -r`

But today make me error in the line 7. (permission denied).

If I rename the output file, the script works fine; but if i use as output `/Kernel-config-`uname -m`-`uname -r` i encounter the error

The permission in my Script direcoy are:

    ls -lh Scripts/
    totale 184K
    -rw-r--r-- 1 sandro sandro   41 27 mar 22.03 Boinc_start

    -rwxr--r-- 1 sandro sandro  503 20 set 23.00 Sync_config_files

This is ery strange cause is from today that i encounter this trouble.

    Making an experiment:

    sandro@ci74771ht ~ $ echo kernel-config-$(uname -m)-$(uname -r)
    kernel-config-4.0.5-gentoo-x86_64

    it seems all ok.

    and if i digit:

    cat /etc/kernels/kernel-config-$(uname -m)-$(uname -r)

    I can see my config-kernel.

But if i use the syntax from command line, i obtain the error

    sandro@ci74771ht ~ $ cat ~/Funtoo/kernel-config-`uname -m`-`uname -r` > ~/Funtoo/kernel-config-`uname -m`-`uname -r`

It seems me strange, cause are years that i use this command ..... wh now this trouble ?

    Thank You for any suggestion

    Hi :)

  10. I've either Funtoo-stable (that is my primary OS), W10 (for the family) and Gentoo (cause i like also it).

I use the same make.conf for funtoo and Gentoo; the differences are in "local USE <=> /etc/portage/package.use" and in package.accept_keywords, but it is not your case since you use the "current version" (you must have the package.accept_keywords file empty).

If You want I can try to create a connection using sshd for example, to see the status of your system and to search the method to "tune" your system.

However, if you dislike this idea, then in your successive post give to us the output ..... so to "see" if someone can tell to you the solution.

    With estimate

    Sandro.

  11. What stage you've used ? if you have used "pure64" there will be a problem.

If You've used the "normal" (multilib) stage 3 , so no problem ......

I post to you my make.conf (consider it as en example, cause the flexibility of Funtoo can make you able to  configure your computer as you want).

    What cpu have you ?

    cat /proc/cpuinfo

Pay attention: I've used in *FLAGS "-Ofast that is equal to (-O3 -ffast-math) and -ftree-vectorize, but some ebuilds doesn't compile with these use then I think to use "-march=native -O2 -pipe" (-O3 works fine if your cpu has a lot of L2 cache, otherwise use "-O2").

About "Global USE Flags, you can see https://www.gentoo.org/support/use-flags/

However you can use eselect or ego & epro .... it depend of your preference :)

I hope that my suggestions are of Your interesting to compile Your magic new Funtoo :P :) :) :)

There is possible that you encounter some trouble but .... no problem; at the end you'll have a brilliant and fascinous serious & performant system (with optimization not all software try benefit, but in same case you must have 3x or 4x faster than a precompiled distro :P.... i tell this words cause i've made various benchmarks :)

    Ask for any trouble .....

    Good Work Dear friend :)

PS: Looking that i've commented the PORTAGE_TMPDIR; i've 16 GiB of ram then I can compile also libreoffice using /dev/shm. 8GiB are Good for 99% of the software; but by default not for libreoffice or chromium....... in this case you must specify the size of /dev/shm in /etc/fstab to 6GB. But it is not for now important....... if You want to use /dev/shm to compile in ram, tell me; otherwise, don't declare PORTAGE_TMPDIR (by default will be /var/tmp/.

I hope not to have create confusion :|

    Good Work :)

  12. I've no oxperience about lxde; but in KDE the usbkeys or others are mounted in /run/media/username/

now I make an experiment installing lxde :)

I wil tell to you :)

PS: very strange..... either in lxde than in KDE reduires root password to have access at the usbkey or other "pluggable" devices (i'm in plugdev and usb  and cdrom, cdrw group :|)

few time ago ... there wasn't the request of root password..... may be a little bug ? or same wrong impostation ?

This is not the first time that there is this trouble..... it seems the "anytime" the policy changes @_@

Sometimes more permissive ... sometimes more restrictives ...... Boh :(

    I don't know Sorry and excuse me ... :(

  13. Fantastic magic Daniel :)

Your words must be written also in a book: "Hystory of processors" :)

I use "-march=native" cause sometimes in advanced steppings were added new instructions.

But to have a stage3 compiled for various architectures is a great idea and a great work.

I think only funtoo is so precise.
    I like Your Work .....

... and another time .... thank You Daniel !!!!!!!!

I respect you very much ...... You're a great man.

Thank You for Your Work !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  14. I think you must select "desktop" since You use a DE (xfce4 in your case).

Do You want to try to change the profile to "Desktop" ? (this enable some use flags that may be necessary for using a Desktop environment).

    I use xfce4 and kde.

It is possible to use also the "old" method:

    # eselect profile list

    Best Regards

    Sandro.

PS: could you describe Your hardware ? (thanks) :)

PS2: but may be that you've "circular dependencies" ?

    Ciao :)

  15. Excuse me Cardinal .... I hope not to bored You for my "intromission" ......

There is the possibility of use "-march=native" instead -march=core_abcxyz ....

with this little script you can see if there are differences launching once with native and in another terminal wi -march=your_subarch

    echo 'int main(){return 0;}' > test.c && gcc -v -Q -march=native -O2 test.c -o test && rm test.c test

for example i've an haswell 4771; there are 2 or 3 new instructions respect for example an Haswell 4730 K

    __________________________________________________________________________

    The 2nd thing:

    I use for LDFLAGS

    LDFLAGS="${LDFLAGS} -Wl,--hash-style=gnu"

    ________________________________________________________________

The last: if you use Gentoo-sources and you want to compile using specific instructions, you must at first abilitate the "experimental" USE; then:

    # euse -E experimental -p sys-kernel/gentoo-sources && emerge gentoo-sources

(this will be "visible" in /etc/portage/package.use)

If You use "Stable with kernel 4.0.5 you'll be able to use also the BFQ scheduler

I whish that i have not bored You .......  (excuse me Cardinal)

    good work !!!!!!!!!

    PS: Ah remember to use:

    # emerge cpuinfo2cpuflags

and add the output to the make.conf.
