I'm installing on an old laptop using the next Core2_64/stage3-latest.tar.xz. I attempted ego sync and it errored out stating that /var/git/meta-repo was missing. I was able to get it working by cloning it off github. You might want to look at all the stage3 tarballs and make sure meta-repo is included and patch it if necessary.
