    Impossible to use new kernel...

Which tutorial is that? I don't think that's what you should be doing in funtoo. But anyway, looks like the kernel isn't there so go back and tell the steps you did.

    pass with gpg-agent?

Yeah I did in the end. Not sure exactly what made it work but this is what I currently have: in my ~/.zprofile: envfile="$HOME/.gnupg/gpg-agent.env" if [[ -e "$envfile" ]] && kill -0 $(grep GPG_AGENT_INFO "$envfile" | cut -d: -f 2) 2>/dev/null; then eval "$(cat "$envfile")" else eval "$(gpg-agent --daemon --enable-ssh-support --write-env-file "$envfile")" fi export GPG_AGENT_INFO # the env file does not contain the export statement export SSH_AUTH_SOCK # enable gpg-agent for ssh GPG_TTY=$(tty) export GPG_TTY In ~/.gnupg/gpg.conf I have: use-agent And eselect pinentry set to pinentry-qt I'm using this with PassFF addon for firefox so whenever it fills login forms when I want it to and doesn't ask me every time for the master password for a set amount of time.
  3. I've had this problem since kernel 4.4.0 so it could be regression but it is also present in 4.4.0-r1. I've found quite a few old posts around on google about it but no solutions. This is all with hibernate-script. I can hibernate-ram but when I hibernate the screen goes black with the flashing cursor, as expected, but then comes back with this message: hibernate Goodbye! /bin/echo: write error: Device or resource busy * Running hdparm on /dev/sda ... media-sound/cantata no devices feature

Not sure what's going on here, I used to have this working but apparently not any more. Cantata is supposed to have a feature where you can send files to usb devices, there is supposed to be an icon on the left side for devices too. I've built it with the following USE flags but there is no devices option anywhere. I can't think what could be causing it, I have udisks installed, which pulled in consolekit and polkit, would the problem lie somewhere with those? + + cdda : Add Compact Disk Digital Audio (Standard Audio CD) support + + cddb : Access cddb servers to retrieve and submit information about compact disks + + dynamic : <unknown> + + http-server : <unknown> - - kde : Add support for KDE (K Desktop Environment) + + lame : Prefer using LAME libraries for MP3 encoding support - - linguas_cs : Czech locale - - linguas_de : German locale + + linguas_en_GB : English locale for Britain - - linguas_es : Spanish locale - - linguas_hu : Hungarian locale - - linguas_ko : Korean locale - - linguas_pl : Polish locale - - linguas_ru : Russian locale - - linguas_zh_CN : Chinese locale for Peoples Republic of China + + mtp : Enable support for Media Transfer Protocol + + musicbrainz : Lookup audio metadata using MusicBrainz community service (musicbrainz.org) + + online-services : <unknown> + + qt5 : Add support for the Qt 5 application and UI framework + + replaygain : <unknown> + + streams : <unknown> + + taglib : Enable tagging support with taglib + + udisks : Enable storage management support (automounting, volume monitoring, etc) Udisks USE flags - - cryptsetup : Enable sys-fs/cryptsetup support - - debug : Enable extra debug codepaths, like asserts and extra output. If you want to get meaningful backtraces see https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Project:Quality_Assurance/Backtraces + + gptfdisk : Pull in sys-apps/gptfdisk for sgdisk command as used by partitioning functionality + + introspection : Use dev-libs/gobject-introspection for introspection Polkit USE flags - - examples : Install examples, usually source code - - gtk : Add support for x11-libs/gtk+ (The GIMP Toolkit) - - introspection : Add support for GObject based introspection - - jit : Enable just-in-time compilation for improved performance. May prevent use of some PaX memory protection features in Gentoo Hardened. - - kde : Add support for KDE (K Desktop Environment) + + nls : Add Native Language Support (using gettext - GNU locale utilities) + + pam : Add support for PAM (Pluggable Authentication Modules) - DANGEROUS to arbitrarily flip - - test : Workaround to pull in packages needed to run with FEATURES=test. Portage-2.1.2 handles this internally, so don't set it in make.conf/package.use anymore Consolekit USE flags + + acl : Add support for Access Control Lists - - debug : Enable extra debug codepaths, like asserts and extra output. If you want to get meaningful backtraces see https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Project:Quality_Assurance/Backtraces - - doc : Add extra documentation (API, Javadoc, etc). It is recommended to enable per package instead of globally + + pam : Add support for PAM (Pluggable Authentication Modules) - DANGEROUS to arbitrarily flip + + policykit : Use the PolicyKit framework (sys-auth/polkit) to get authorization for suspend/shutdown. - - systemd-units : Install systemd unit files to replace the modern functionality of logind in sys-apps/systemd. Not recommended. - - test : Workaround to pull in packages needed to run with FEATURES=test. Portage-2.1.2 handles this internally, so don't set it in make.conf/package.use anymore

    pass with gpg-agent?

I don't know if I should be using keychain for this (I did try but got completely confused and gave up). I use app-admin/pass and I would like to not have to enter my password every time I access a password. According to the pass documentation you can set gpg-agent to cache the master password but I don't seem to have any luck with that, pass is still asking me every time. In ~/.gnupg/gpg.conf I have: use-agent In ~/.gnupg/gpg-agent.conf I have: default-cache-ttl 10000 In ~/.xinitrc I have: eval "$(gpg-agent --daemon)" if [ -f "${HOME}/.gpg-agent-info" ]; then . "${HOME}/.gpg-agent-info" export GPG_AGENT_INFO export SSH_AUTH_SOCK fi In ~/.zshrc I have: GPG_TTY=$(tty) export GPG_TTY I don't really know what I'm doing here though and something obviously isn't working because pass is asking every time for the password.

    Can't install boot-update

This looks to be fixed, sync again.
  7. Ok, your loss if you can't copy and paste some commands.
  8. No, but it's quite simple to install. edit: I tried to install void linux the other day and it was a nightmare because of the installer, either not working or not being clear on what it required. I'm glad the funtoo install is as it is, it means that it works and you understand what you need to do. It's much easier in my opinion.

Getting quite a few build failures

I've solved this, it turns out that for some reason my qtchooser directory and settings was wiped out, creating them manually fixed the issues I was having. http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/blfs/view/7.4/general/qtchooser.html https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-7732440.html

Getting quite a few build failures

media-libs/opencv - http://sprunge.us/cZgb media-sound/cantata - http://sprunge.us/iMjg media-gfx/nomacs - http://sprunge.us/LPFV I don't really mind not having these packages but they all seem to be related qt. Is there something I am missing that's causing this?
  11. I've been trying to troubleshoot this for a while but I can't get to the bottom of it. If I copy a large file, such as a movie, to usb stick wth ntfs on it my machine becomes intermittently unresponsive, the mouse will freeze for a fraction of a second but repeatedly. This only happens with ntfs. I don't see any high cpu usage when this is happening. I have tried: different usb sticks different ways of copying (dragging dropping from file explorer, cp) bfs/bfq/deadline different kernels (vanilla, 3.14 to 4.2) - I thought that vanilla solved it but that's not the case mounting with "ntfs-3g -o big_writes /dev/sdc1 /mnt" having ntfs enabled/disabled in the kernel I would just accept that perhaps this happens with ntfs but I just booted in to a live usb I have with porteus/lxqt and this freezing doesn't happen. I don't know what else to try but it's becoming incredibly annoying. Any ideas?

    I/O schedulers for desktops

Which is the best one for desktops with spinning disks? I've always used CFQ or BFQ but I was recommended deadline the other day and after looking at a some benchmarks it seems that deadline does have quit good performance. I still don't know which to use though.
