  1. Please remove this post I have made a mistake
  2. Hi! I have just succeeded, with much help from the friends in Discord to finish a new install from stage3-intel64-westmere-next-2023-07-11.tar.xz, and got XFCE, firefox-bin, VLC,, Openshot, OBS-Studio,AbiWord, Libreoffice, Pulse and pavu, and several other to start nicely. I have not yet tested how some of them - which i use seldom - are functioning, but overall its feeling good. One thing though is keeping me from using Funtoo as the main distro in this multiboot (all my machines are multiboot as a matter of principle) machine, and that is the programs i use the most, like Audacity, Rosegarden and MuseScore. Qsynth also, but at least fluidsynth is available. and QjackCtl, but that is not an absolute need. I had thought of filling a bug report, but I wonder whether I would have to fill a long list of Bug reports, which would take considerably much time from an inveterate and and not so efficient (yet quite content) distro-hopper constantlly struggling with updatings and forum consultations. So I am asking for advice here first, and in order to make things simpler, I am presenting the problems in code format, gathered today immediately after running: # ego sync # emerge -uaDN @world As below: xiaHP ~ # emerge -a audacity These are the packages that would be merged, in order: Calculating dependencies... done! emerge: there are no ebuilds to satisfy ">=media-libs/libsoundtouch-1.3.1". I have though noticed that Funtoo is not the only one having problem with these applications. Some of them are also present in some of my other distros (Slackware, Artix, Void). With the exception of Void which I have started to use much later than the others, all worked great, and some still do in older installs in my older Core Duo desktop, where I am affraid to update Funtoo as Audacity is still installed, although not starting, something I will be taking in another thread here, or Discord, or a bug-report. As funtoo is in itself working great so far I will continue to use it often in my everyday, using another machine when doing music. Strangely enough the last few weeks I have been using my music stuff mostly Audacity simultaneously with Rosegarden, in an older CoreDuo with 2GB ram and it is just fine.
  3. I applied the patch, before I saw Daniel Robbins advice, and when attempting once again to update got new error message which I will include in my first ever attempt to report a bug - it will probably take a while. The funny thing was that when I tried to start Audacity to include its messages on the bug report it started nicely. Thanks for your support.
  4. Thanks Cardinal for yet another prompt answer. I will report as soon as I am able to try it.
  5. I tried to # emerge -uaDN @world and got the following message: I don't have enough experience to handle this without help. Will be thankful for advice. I had already done a such update, and then tried to re-install/update audacity. which was still not working after the full update, and then, while the update was going on I was searching the net via Firefox and had a few programs running, and then my Core 2 froze. I then run upon rebooting. in hope of finishing the processing of audacity., but what started was an updating of a couple hours, where I noticed building of something like net-lib or netlib. When it was finally over I ran: And after that I ran the command at the start of this post, which gave me dependency conflict message.
  6. I am also looking for some source of informatiom on Macaroni. I tested it and it worked nicely. It would be nice to have some way of exchanging experiences and knowledge.
  7. I can' t find a link for support at the Macarroni site and I wonder whether one could ask here in case someone knows the answer, without expecting any obligation on your side. I would like to incorporate Macarroni's iso in the Multiboot usb stick I usually travel with, but I had no success in booting the iso file from the usb, which has grub on its MBR, msdos partition table and boots several distros. I don't even know if Macarroni's iso is bootable under these conditions. I can think of partitioning the usb stick with a GPT table if that is absolutely necessary to incorporate Macarroni. Excuse me if you find this is not a convenient question
  8. echo 'net-print/cups-2.2.11-r1 -zeroconf' >> /etc/portage/package.use did not work but echo '=x11-libs/gtk+-3.24.23-r2 -cups' did. I have no idea of how I came to think of it. But I am glad. I have installed next/Gnome and it went swiftly. It is missing a few media packages, so while I wait for them I plan to use current/XFCE - which runs the media stuff I need in two other machines - and I am installing it now in a third one which was the reason for this post. FUNTOO IS A GREAT DISTRIBUTION.
  9. I have installed Funtoo from stage3, carefully following the Install Guide, rebooted, adjusted my profile and run # ego sync # emerge -uaDN @world and got an error message: *Error: circular dependencies: (net-dns/avahi-0.8.0/0::core-kit, ebuild scheduled for merge) depends on (x11-libs/gtk+-3.24.23-r2:3/3::gnome-kit, ebuild scheduled for merge) (buildtime) (net-print/cups-2.2.11-r1:0/0::desktop-kit, ebuild scheduled for merge) (buildtime) (net-dns/avahi-0.8.0/0::core-kit, ebuild scheduled for merge) (buildtime) It might be possible to break this cycle by applying any of the following changes: - net-print/cups-2.2.11-r1 (Change USE: -zeroconf) - net-dns/avahi-0.8 (Change USE: -gtk) - x11-libs/gtk+-3.24.23-r2 (Change USE: -cups) Note that this change can be reverted, once the package has been installed I haven´t been able to find instructions on the syntax of /etc/portage/package.use and I wonder whether this would be correct: echo 'net-print/cups-2.2.11-r1 -zeroconf' >> /etc/portage/package.use
  10. I am installing next,Gnome in place of current,XFCE. # emerge --search musescore [ Results for search key : musescore ] Searching... [ Applications found : 0 ] I had it running on current,XFCE. May this mean It has to be fetched from some third part repo? I don't remember how I first got it, it was more than an year ago.
  11. I have re-installed funtoo after having accidentally damaged my perfectly functioning one year old installation. I followed instructions more closely now and changed to next, Gnome (from previous current w Xfce). Installation went swiftly, but I have stumbled on Audacity: @lifebook-1 ~ $ emerge -p audacity These are the packages that would be merged, in order: Calculating dependencies... done! emerge: there are no ebuilds to satisfy ">=media-libs/portaudio-19.06.00-r2[alsa?]". (dependency required by "media-sound/audacity-2.3.3::media-kit" [ebuild]) (dependency required by "audacity" [argument]) I had Audacity running without problems in the earlier install. Any hints ? (Thanks in advance)
  12. I have just installed funtoo on an external disk connected to a laptop and everything has gone well. This is a multiboot set-up with some Linux distros on the external disk and Windows on the internal, just in case I may need it, which is extremely rare. I have used funtoo in this set-up for about an year without problems, but I accidentally damaged 3 partitions recently and that is why I am reinstalling. I am still pretty much of a newbie, without formal technical background and I don' t like to mess around with grub. I have been booting most of my multiboot set-ups with Manjaro since my previous favorite bootloader (in Mint) failed to boot Manjaro. funtoo's installation guide points the use of ego boot, which led me to post a question here - https://forums.funtoo.org/topic/5005-can-i-have-funtoo-in-a-multiboot-set-up/ - when I first installed funtoo. Unfortunately I don't remember how I dealt with it then in order to have the good result I had. I expect things will work if I just update grub in the booting distribution, which at the moment happens to be MX-Linux, and is working well as a test after I used it on older very limited machine. I have also been able to boot multiboots by writing "40_custom" files, so I think I can get funtoo started somehow but I don't want to miss <ego boot>, if possible. The main reason for this post is that I have been waiting to find time to try the multibooting suggestion proposed at https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=42&t=315584&p=1807167&hilit=pbear+tutorial+custom+grub#p1807167 which requires installation of grub to the PBR of non-booting distros, but I am afraid to damage my funtoo installation if I install grub to the PBR of funtoo's root partition. When I searched for this topic the only relevant text I found was this - at https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/709783/cannot-find-a-grub-drive-for-dev-sda1-check-your-device-map: I am pretty unsure about what to do. P.s.: It just occurred to me that maybe I should rather post this question to some GRUB forum as far as custom.cfgs are concerned, but as far as funtoo is concerned you guys are my preferred source to answer whether funtoo can have grub in its PBR.
  13. Perfect ! this not only solved the problem, it also helped me understans what was wrong, namely that I never looked into https://www.funtoo.org/GPG_Signatures/Metro_Plaintext_Keys probably because I wrongly and uncounsciously assumed that that link concerned just stage3 files. Now I understand ! Thanks cardinal !
  14. Thanks cardinal ! So I must edit the node.txt file in the right way. But this is still a problem for me. @ https://www.funtoo.org/GPG_Signatures >: would that be : D3B948F82EE8B4020A0410789A658306E986E8EE ????? and I think it was here i missed it totally, by using the signatures I got from the output of the command for receiving the key. I think I also missed something in that I was trying to verify the ISO for the LIVE USB, which I assumed I ought to do since there was a "funtoo-livecd-20220715-1607.iso.gpg" file in the mirror I downloaded from. Tomorrow I will try again with this and what you pointed out in mind . Thanks again.
