  1. Hi,

I have been using Funtoo in the past.  But I recently retired, bought a new laptop and just giving back a try at Funtoo, I'm kind of new here and would like to know if gnome 41 is going to hit portage soon ?

Since it is said on Funtoo site that gnome is a Class A support and since Gnome 41 is available since end of september 2021, I was expecting to build a recent gnome for desktop (not 3.36).

It's not to blame anybody, but I would like to know the plans about gnome ?  Is it the best desktop to have with Funtoo  ?

If one want to have a recent desktop, wich one would it be ?  Or is there a "funtoo" way to install a more recent gnome  ?

    Regards,

                   BT

  2. Answering my own question since I found a solution.

You have to use the partition name for that command, not the LUKS mapping ...

Here is what I did :

(chroot) # cryptsetup luksAddKey swap /bt_keyfile.bin
swap n'est pas un périphérique LUKS valide.
    (chroot) # cryptsetup luksAddKey /dev/mapper/swap /bt_keyfile.bin
/dev/mapper/swap n'est pas un périphérique LUKS valide.
    (chroot) # cryptsetup luksAddKey /dev/sda3 /bt_keyfile.bin
Entrez une phrase secrète existante :
(chroot) # echo ### yes it worked! ####

    Sorry for the noise,

                          Bernard

  3. I'm trying to install funtoo and I want my laptop to be encrypted.  I choose to install firstly funtoo on a USB disk to test how it behave before moving it to the laptop disk eventually.

I'm using the regular gnome stage 3.

Everything is going well until now. I'm in at the chroot on  my laptop actually trying to finalize installatiion.

But I'm having an issue to add a new passphrase on a keyfile for the 2 encrypted disks (root and swap).

Here is the disk  (One touch HDD USB3  1Tb):

    # lsblk /dev/sda
NAME MAJ:MIN RM SIZE RO TYPE MOUNTPOINTS
    sda 8:0 0 931.5G 0 disk
    ├─sda1 8:1 0 1G 0 part
    ├─sda2 8:2 0 447.7G 0 part
    │ └─root 254:3 0 447.7G 0 crypt funtoo root encrypted
    ├─sda3 8:3 0 17G 0 part
    │ └─swap 254:2 0 17G 0 crypt funtoo swap encrypted
    └─sda4 8:4 0 465.8G 0 part backup disk ext4
    #

I can't add the new passphrase from the keyfile.   Here is what happens :

    ### keyfile was generated with dd if=/dev/random bs=63 of=bt_keyfile.bin ###
    # ls -al bt_keyfile.bin
    -rw------- 1 root root 63 Dec 29 15:42 bt_keyfile.bin
    #
    cryptsetup open /dev/sda3 swap
    ####typing passphrase here###
    #
###Now trying to add a new key from the keyfile
    #
    # cryptsetup -v luksAddKey swap bt_keyfile.bin --debug
    # cryptsetup 2.4.2 processing "cryptsetup -v luksAddKey swap bt_keyfile.bin --debug"
    # Running command luksAddKey.
    # Locking memory.
    # Installing SIGINT/SIGTERM handler.
    # Unblocking interruption on signal.
    # Allocating context for crypt device swap.
    # Trying to open and read device swap with direct-io.
    # Trying to open device swap without direct-io.
Device swap does not exist or access denied.
    # Unlocking memory.
Command failed with code -4 (wrong device or file specified).
    #
    ### But the device is really there and open. Why ??????
    #
    # ls /dev/mapper
    control swap
    # cryptsetup status swap
    /dev/mapper/swap is active.
      type: LUKS1
      cipher: aes-xts-plain64
      keysize: 512 bits
      key location: dm-crypt
      device: /dev/sda3
      sector size: 512
      offset: 4096 sectors
      size: 35647488 sectors
      mode: read/write

I have been searching/googling around for a while, but no luck.

I have the same error if I try to add the new passphrase from the  linux on the laptop (GarudaLinux (arch based)) or if I try from the funtoo live iso either.

Anybody would have some clues to help me solve this ?  I need to be able to mount the swap without typing a second passphrase.

    Regards,

               Bernard

I'm installing Funtoo in a VM under KVM.  Booted the VM with 3Gb memory, 25Gb vdisk with ext2 /boot on vda1, btrfs root on vda3 (yes I had to recompile genkernel and linux-debian-source) and 2Gb swap on vda2.  The vm processors are a copy of the current machine and virtmanage show it is an "Opteron_G3".

I have installed inxi in the vm and it show the following info :

    (chroot)livecd /etc/portage # inxi -faz

I have added use flag "btrfs" in the make.conf previously.

Anything I have forget ?  Or is that a problem with the AMD microcode not loading ???

    Regards,

                  BT

Any hint how to finally be able to boot this VM ???

  5. I just found that I had a GEOIP block iptables that blocked CN,UA,TW,RO,HK.  It was interfering with some of the servers of build.funtoo.org.

I had this rule to block people from Asia that where constantly knocking at my ssh port on port 443.  I had to use 443 because of work firewall restriction.

As soon I deleted the GeoIP_Restriction chain everything came back to normal.   Sorry for the wrong alarm call ! It was me.

    Regards,

                   Bernard

  6. Thanks, I did continue installation with generic 64 bits stage3 image and naturally the AMD firmware package.  But I was just trying to guess why is only that one subarch  missing ??? and it happen to be the one my laptop need ???

The part about unresolvable dependency block is more disturbing to me ...  I'm just testing funtoo installation on a VM for now.  I'm still waiting for my new laptop to be delivered.  But if the installation and administration of the laptop become to heavy/complicated I might switch to Artix, Void Linux or Devuan.  I have tried void linux with enlightenment and its really very, very fast.

    Thanks for answering,

                                        BT

  7. Would it be logical that it happens when installing from stage3 in a VM and have not yet configured anything related to the clock ???

I'm testing an installation of funtoo in a VM under KVM.   I booted the VM with the Funtoo liveCD and it is not in the good zoneinfo (I'm in America/Montreal) and the VM is on UTC.

It's not a big deal since I can download anyway by adding --no-check-certificate.  The message about the certificate is confusing.

    Regards,

                  Bernard

  8. Hi,

I hope I do not hijack this post. But it's exactly what I need to know and it's 2 years old with no answer ...

Anybody found wich arch use instead of AMD64_Jaguar since it seems to be still missing ??

I'm testing installation of Funtoo on my old laptop.  Waiting for the new one to arrive.   Been using funtoo in the far away past and thinking of using it for my new laptop  (it's gonna be a ryzen 7 5300U).
