mitzip reacted to drobbins in Getting Rid of Forums and Moving to Reddit?
A lot of good points. I especially like the constructive negative comments which make it helpful to think through the pros and cons.
While we don't have a lot of inbound links from reddit, we do have a ton of organic traffic flowing in from reddit.

Perfect, that sounds like a great idea! Additionally, I've taken the liberty to create a "New Hotness" RSS feed from the Funtoo bug tracker. It'll give you all new features and improvements! I figured I'd start with that in Trsst
http://bugs.funtoo.org/sr/jira.issueviews:searchrequest-rss/10800/SearchRequest-10800.xml?tempMax=1000
Of course, it's also accessible as a dashboard item and shared search in the Funtoo JIRA bugtracker at http://bugs.funtoo.org/secure/IssueNavigator.jspa?mode=hide&requestId=10800

mitzip reacted to drobbins in Major Changes to Tree
Everyone,
There have been some major changes to the Portage tree. I spent nearly all weekend and more hacking away to adjust to the various multilib changes in upstream Gentoo, as well as getting GNOME 3.6 to function again.
MANY issues related to this were fixed, but you will also likely experience a few quirks due to all the changes. For anything that is unpleasant or sub-optimal, please report a bug at http://bugs.funtoo.org.
Thanks for using Funtoo! :)

mitzip reacted to drobbins in Phew! Wiki updates
I just completed a marathon session of wiki updates, which included:
Updating our incredibly outdated FAQ.... http://www.funtoo.org/Funtoo_Linux_FAQ
Updating our Funtoo Profiles page: http://www.funtoo.org/Funtoo_1.0_Profile
And then updating our main wiki page to try to do a better job for people -- linking to the Funtoo Linux Vision, as well as FAQ, and go into detail in the Distinctives section, so people know how Funtoo differs from other Linux distributions in general as well as Gentoo specifically.
Overall, I think the main page is shaping up... the goal is to get people up-to-speed quickly and over to useful information on other pages.

I appreciate this suggestion. It is something I've thought of too. I think it would require a very detailed plan of action and set of deliverables. Right now, this isn't a great time to do that. But after I get some other things done, who knows, maybe it should be considered seriously.

mitzip reacted to Ghent in Net Neutrality & You
For all of us here I am sure this is a topic that we feel strongly about. However, it's surprising to me how many do not really understand the issue at hand. The powers that be have done an excellent job at covering up the true scope of this change and have mollified those who it would affect the most into inaction.
For those of you who want to know more, this is a very comedic yet completely accurate layman's piece on the situation with Net Neutrality. I would encourage everyone to watch it, even those well versed in the politics of the issue. It's fun and it presents a lot of great information. And it is really... REALLY funny :)

mitzip reacted to drobbins in IMPORTANT: iptables firewalls in containers
Hi everyone,
Some people are trying to set up iptables firewalls in their containers, and they are unexpectedly locking themselves out of their containers.
The reason why this is happening is because stateful connection tracking is disabled by default in OpenVZ inside a container, and I need to manually enable it. So rules that track the state of connection (NEW, ESTABLISHED, RELATED), will not work, and then typically you will lose ssh access to your container.
The solution (for now) is to contact me directly and have me enable stateful connection tracking if you plan to deploy a firewall, so that these rules will work for you.

The new forums do have blogging capabilities that I plan to take advantage of. Users can create their own blogs, and we can also have official Funtoo blogs. I plan to leverage the forums more for announcements than we have in the past. So the forums are probably where you're going to be hooking into an RSS/Atom feed for Funtoo :)
