it looks it trying to start consolekit, while it already started.

please, when you are not in X (and better after reboot) paste output of ls -l /etc/runlevels/*/*

Also, here's the output of 'ps -ef | grep console':

    root 2953 1 0 18:41 ? 00:00:00 /usr/sbin/console-kit-daemon --no-daemon
    root 3143 3134 0 18:43 pts/0 00:00:00 grep --colour=auto console

So then what I did was I killed 'console-kit-daemon', and selected "Xfce Session" again, and this time it did log me into Xfce.  However, looking at the lightdm logs, it still complained about starting a ConsoleKit session:

So manually killing the 'console-kit-daemon' did let me log into Xfce.  But what is it that's triggering it to start?  It does not appear to be included in the 'boot' and 'default' runlevels.

    -- Marat

  2. So I have 'x11-misc/lightdm' version 1.24.0 installed, and configured to start automatically, which it does.  Before logging in, I click on the configuration icon in the upper right, and change 'Xsession' to 'Xfce Session', but when I do login, I still get the Xsession.

Here are my lightdm log files when I login if this is helpful:

    fixed now.

OK, thanks Oleg, works now after 'ego sync'.

    I see your commit: https://github.com/funtoo/kit-fixups/commit/94e0ae64d79efd6ca03a849fe0426c53d37c57d1#diff-54f4a5f008b420d3daba1a5dbd40408a

I take it that file 'funtoo-cautionary' is something like a patch file for the original 'package.mask' from Gentoo, and the minus sign means that that default Gentoo mask entry is getting removed?

    Thanks,

    Marat

the exact gentoo mask is overridden, and i getting no this mask message anywhere on boxes. can you paste full emerge output where this message occurs.

You can see the full output of my  'emerge xorg-x11' command, which is what emitted that unmask message for me, in my first post above.  I did not use any additional command line arguments for that command.  Would you like me to run it again with '-v' or anything else?

    show output of grep -r xorg-server /etc/portage

Hmmm, I just ran this command, but it did not produce any output, as I do not have the token 'xorg-server' in any file under my '/etc/portage'...

And if I just do 'grep -r xorg /etc/portage', I only get:

    /etc/portage/make.profile/parent:xorg-kit:funtoo/kits/python-kit/3.4-prime

    Thanks,

    Marat

    # Matt Turner <mattst88@gentoo.org> (21 Oct 2017)
    # The 1.12 and 1.15 branches are no longer supported and remain vulnerable to
    # various CVEs (CVE-2013-6424, bug #493294 and CVE-2017-2624 bug #611350 just
    # to name a few). They remain in tree only for old nvidia-drivers 96 and 173.
    =x11-base/xorg-drivers-1.17

NOTE: The --autounmask-keep-masks option will prevent emerge
from creating package.unmask or ** keyword changes.

Use --autounmask-write to write changes to config files (honoring
CONFIG_PROTECT). Carefully examine the list of proposed changes,
paying special attention to mask or keyword changes that may expose
    experimental or unstable packages.

It appears that 'xorg-drivers-1.17' has been masked from the Gentoo side due to bugs in versions 1.12 and 1.15, but has been kept in the repo for compatibility with the Nvidia drivers.  But I'm not running Nvidia drivers, even have 'VIDEO_CARDS="intel"' specified in my 'make.conf',' and the version being emerged is 1.17.

If I understand the output correctly the problematic package is being pulled in by 'x11-drivers/xf86-input-evdev-2.9.2::xorg-kit', but it has no USE flag to turn off Nvidia support.

Is this package just masked in error by Gentoo since it is not version 1.12 or 1.15, and safe to unmask?  Or should I do something else like switch to a different branch in 'xorg-kit'?  Please advise...

    8 hours ago, jhan said:

What do you mean by not supported? Versions of gcc higher than 5.4.0 are just masked for some reason, probably as they haven't been tested well enough. But you can always unmask those versions. I'm currently working with 6.3.0 but could switch to 7.2.0 if needed or wanted.

OK, not "not supported", just requires unmasking.

I looked at the replies more closely, and see that bug https://bugs.funtoo.org/browse/FL-4235 was filed on this issue, and gcc 5.4 which can compile that version of chromium can now be selected with 'eselect' without having to unmask it.

  8. OK, understand that the latest chromium package is not compiling because the latest supported version of gcc does not support compiling it.  But then, if that chromium package cannot be compiled, why is it not masked so that the previous version that could be compiled would be used instead?

Is it not masked for the users that use clang instead of gcc?  I assume there is no way to select which compiler to use on a per-package basis?

    Thanks,

    Marat

This looks to me like Chromium has some new feature that would allow websites to detect the ambient light level around the user and adjust UI shades and colors accordingly, but the associated code may not compile across some configurations. I do not believe there is a way to deactivate this feature with USE flags.

Any suggestions?  Any additional info I could provide?  Thanks folks!
