Looking at the specifications of the Lenovo G50-30 it seems to me that this computer also has a dual graphics chipset (Intel/Nvidia), as does mine. If I remember correctly, my graphic problems stopped when I removed th nvidia support and only used intel graphics.

Thank you, @jhan ! According to specification of Lenovo G50-30 it used 2GB DDR3L RAM, but I mounted 4GB DDR3.

It stopped due to RAM crashes. ☺️

  2. Hello! I am trying to install gentoo-sources again, cause the problem of my Laptop Lenovo G 50-30 rests, it suddenly freezes sometimes.

I emerged and compiled gentoo-sources and it successfully booted but I am watching 3 problems:

    1. Sound does not work

    2. Debian sources was deleted from boot, so I have only one kernel that works not fine.

    I did only that:

    # cd /usr/src
    # rm linux
    # ln -s linux-4.15.12-gentoo linux
    # genkernel --menuconfig all
''' then I loaded .config from debian-sources folder
''' and switched on some Atheros Wireless drivers,
''' switched off all other wifi drivers, wimax, switched off bluetooth
''' also switched off one single line of ipv6 support
''' switched off several lines in firmware: Dell bios
''' and saved my config to /usr/src/linux/.config

    # boot-update
    # reboot

Now I have only gentoo kernel compiled and placed into /boot . Where is debian-sources?

I  have no sound. What to do for sound?

    Gentoo-sources config, devices, modules, dmesg:

    # cat /usr/src/linux/.config | nc termbin.com 9999
    http://termbin.com/a5kz

    # lspci | nc termbin.com 9999
    http://termbin.com/l19gb

    # lsmod | nc termbin.com 9999
    http://termbin.com/t2du

    # cat dmesg | nc termbin.com 9999
    http://termbin.com/3ubf

PS: and more then that, genkernel says during compilation process :

    >> Not installing firmware as requested by configuration FIRMWARE_INSTALL=no...

    but I have installed linux-firmware:

    # equery l linux-firmware
     * Searching for linux-firmware ...
    [I-O] [ ] sys-kernel/linux-firmware-20180314:0

I need some actual manual about kernel compilation for local architecture and tasks. I want to remove all unnecessary stuff.

Can I unmark all lines in Device drivers ? And how to determine necessary lines for my pc looking lsmod??

Can I unmark all from Network support and what shuold I enable for connect to router via wifi atheros qualcom, using only ipv4 without ipv6?

    Do you recommend localmodconfig?

  3. I think the problem was I untar without 'p' flag.. Also can share this:

When I boot intoo gentoo-sources it booted into console without xdm, wlan drivers. But booted. After I recompiled gentoo-sources it did not booted - just first screen of boot log and then black screen (when usually log becomes in a smaller font). The same with debian-sources - before recompile it booted in console, but after recompile it gives black screen.

  5. Hi! While install or recover system I see fonts are not readable in Russian sites. some letters are showing, some are squares with utf numbers. even linux .org.ru/forum has this problem

    1. how install russian fonts temporary when boted from systemrescuecd?

    2. is tere any bash script for capture screen if systemrescuecd has nothing

    root@sysresccd /root % whereis imagemagick
    imagemagick:

    % eix fonts
cannot open database file /var/cache/eix/portage.eix for reading
Did you forget to create it with "eix-update"?
    root@sysresccd /root % eix-update
    Reading Portage settings...
    Building database (/var/cache/eix/portage.eix)...
    [0] "gentoo" /usr/portage/ (cache: metadata-md5-or-flat)
         Reading category 164|164 (100) EMPTY!
    Applying masks...
    Calculating hash tables...
    Writing database file /var/cache/eix/portage.eix...
cannot open database file /var/cache/eix/portage.eix for writing (mode = 'wb')

  6. yes. I installed grub and my system booted again.

But trouble is that it does not start services: xdm, wpa_supplicant. lsmod is showing too few modules, without wifi.

I even cannot mount usb, cause `fdisk -l` doesnot see flash and `mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt/usb` not gives effect

So I recompiled my kernel twice  but no effect.

    what can I do ?

    root@sysresccd /root % mkdir /mnt/funtoo
    root@sysresccd /root % mount /dev/sda3 /mnt/funtoo
    root@sysresccd /root % ls /mnt/funtoo
bin boot.tar etc lib lib64 mnt proc run srv tmp var
boot dev fun.tar lib32 lost+found opt root sbin sys usr

is it possible recover absent stuff and how?

  7. No result achieved. Laptop does not boot from ssd after all.

What I did? I booted with systemrescuecd, deleted partitions, created partitions as it was, created filesystems as they were, mounted and untar with ownership and permissions my funtoo files and /boot files. unmount and reboot. Laptop says: PXE: no bootable device.

So i booted iin systemrescuecd again and can paste what I have:

    What is wrong?

  8. while I have my history and by the way workable system I paste what I did

''' delete all tmp data, like this large /var/tmp/portage/distfiles
    # rm -rf /var/tmp
    ''' tar all my folder
    # tar -cvpf funtoo-10-03-2018.tar.gz bin etc lib32 lib64 opt root run sbin srv usr var
''' archive is without compression, so gz is just automatic input by my hands
''' archive was 11 GB and did could not be copied with error by usb flsh Adata ch94)
''' i splitted (process was very long about 25 minutes)
    # split -n 11 funtoo-10-03-2018.tar.gz funtoo-splitted-tar.gz.
''' i got splitted files and copied to usb flash
''' after that i rebooted into workable kernel and tar and copied /boot
    # mount /dev/sda1 /boot
    # tar -cvpf /root/boot.tar /boot
    # cp /root/boot.tar /run/media/user/MYTOM

so now i go to fdisk all my disk, clearing what i have. see you later

Please, can I prepare disk using https://www.funtoo.org/Install#Prepare_Hard_Disk  with that difference that I will not empty partition table with 'o' choice in fdisk tool?

I will only create ext2: from 0 to 128M and swap to 2G. Will my sda3 rest after making this stuff?

  11. in a qna site i read about raid and dolvm in grub.cfg. I rebooted to debian-sources to get access to /dev/sda1. if it is useful here my grub.cfg that I did not touch:

  12. no, i am not creating partition. but I used tool from systemrescuecd to restore partitions cause in last installation I needed to save data on disk and clicked accidentally to mkfs... cannot remember details, but that tool helped to restore partitions and now I am using that partition I had before reinstall. so may be this is causing the problem?

Do you have ext2 support enabled in gentoo-sources?

  15. I found my new kernel config lacks lot of options in 'Pseudo filesystems' and all other sections. Completely empty config. How to determine which option I need to mount /dev/sda1 ?

    # cat /etc/fstab
    ...
    # <fs> <mountpoint>	<type> <opts> <dump/pass>

    /dev/sda1 /boot ext2 noauto,noatime	1 2
    /dev/sda2 none swap sw 0 0
    /dev/sda3 / ext4 noatime 0 1
    #/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom	auto noauto,ro	0 0

  16. Thank you @cardinal! Your advise was simple for reproducing. But one question rested.

    I run this

''' my /dev/sda1 does not mount itself
    # mount /dev/sda1 /boot
    # cd /usr/src
    # rm linux
    # ln -sf /usr/src/linux-4.15.7-gentoo-r1 /usr/src/linux
    # cd /usr/src/linux
    # eselect kernel list
    Available kernel symlink targets:
      [1] linux-4.15.7-gentoo-r1
      [2] linux-debian-sources-4.14.12 *
    # eselect kernel set 1
    # genkernel --menuconfig all
''' then I load last config from linux-debian-sources-4.14.12 and exit menu
''' it compiled kernel and modules
''' and put into /boot dir newkernel

    # boot-update -v

I saw new kernel's line in grub during boot,  gentoo-sources was default. I got error message during start: wpa_supplicant could not started.

I check lsmod and saw Atheros/Qualcom driver was absent. https://bpaste.net/show/a1aaf108a5fd

This manual helped me to setup WLAN driver on Funtoo https://wireless.wiki.kernel.org/en/users/drivers/ath9k

I reconfigured kernel checking new lines:

    Quote

Device drivers -> Network devices -> Wireless LAN ->
    * Atheros/Qualcomm devices
M Atheros 5xxx wireless cards support
M Atheros 5xxx PCI bus support
M Atheros 802.11n wireless cards support
     * Atheros ath9k PCI/PCIe bus support
M Atheros 802.11ac wireless cards support
     M Atheros ath10k PCI support

I just saw `genkernel --menuconfig all` loading debian-sources config and checked all options I found in the other terminal with `genkernel --menuconfig all` (configuring gentoo-sources).

    WLAN works.

But I cannot mount /dev/sda1 and `fdisk -l` looks another

    # mount /dev/sda1 /boot
mount: special device /dev/sda1 does not exist

    # fdisk -l
