  1. Hey everyone, I'm pleased to announce that Funtoo Linux and Sabayon (https://www.sabayon.org) are joining forces! Now to explain what this means and how it came about. Sabayon is one of the great Open Source projects and has an amazing reputation for delivering an easy-to-use Linux desktop that is built using Gentoo. For quite a while, Funtoo has been supporting the Sabayon effort because we believe in what they do. Over the past several months, in chatting with the Sabayon team, it became really clear that we had a shared vision for creating a friendly and innovative commu

    The Funtoo Way

Hey everyone, I have updated our Development Guide to contain information on the "Funtoo Way". The "Funtoo Way" is a really important philosophy about how we do things at Funtoo and I strongly encourage everyone to read it, even if you don't consider yourself a "developer". It helps to explain how our community works and how we can work together. https://www.funtoo.org/Development_Guide Best, Daniel

  4. Hi All, core-gl-kit is now on 2.0-release by default. You will see updates to many packages. Now available are Intel Iris graphics, which is much faster and supported on modern Intel integrated graphics chipsets. To use Intel Iris, perform the following steps: # epro mix-ins -gfxcard-intel +gfxcard-intel-iris # emerge -auDN @world --jobs=3 If you want to continue with the classic drivers, or are not using Intel integrated graphics at all, you can just do the world update to get updates. Please report any issues you encounter to bugs.funtoo.org! There have been major

We hope KDE users will enjoy this as a lot of hard work has gone into this one with over 500 KDE-plasma packages updated. If for some reason you find a bug, please report it with the relevant information needed to help troubleshoot the issue to https://bugs.funtoo.org so it can be fixed as soon as possible. 6. I have posted an announcement on www.funtoo.org that we are doing an official "End of Year" pause for 2020. 2020 has been an interesting year and this is a good time to take a break if you have vacation. Funtoo will be back in 2021. Tree updates will be minimal during the break.

  8. Just going to follow up with some more info. First, thanks to pross for pointing out I had a typo in the 'epro' command above, now fixed! 🙂 The difference between Intel Iris and 'classic' Intel is that 'classic' Intel uses the xf86-video-intel driver (with ebuild of same name), which has classically been the way you get accelerated video with Intel Integrated graphics. The Iris graphics uses the more generic 'modesetting' driver (no special ebuild for this), and uses a gallium-based driver which is now a part of media-libs/mesa so xf86-video-intel is not used at all. 9. Hi All, To get ready for future improvements to Funtoo, I am adopting a multi-phased approach to 'fix Python'. First step is to address some issues that exist in the Gentoo python eclasses. I've updated these eclasses to be at least somewhat better than they are in Gentoo. These changes will be hitting the tree in an hour or so. For new ebuilds, you can now use the following rather than enumerating every single version of Python: PYTHON_COMPAT=( python3+ ) Because the minimum version of python3 we support is 3.7, this will ensure that the ebuild will be marked compatible with 3.7 a

    Steam flatpak install

Your steam installation in Flatpak should have a bin_steam.sh in /../com.valvesoftware.Steam/current/active/files/lib/steam. Also a bootstrap.....tar.xz file. The script unpacks the bootstrap file in a .local/share/Steam directory. The bin_steam.sh script tells you where it installs around line 95: function install_bootstrap() { STEAMDIR="$1" # Save the umask and set strong permissions omask="$(umask)" umask 0077 echo $"Setting up Steam content in $STEAMDIR" Towards the end of the script there is the function check

    Funtoo KDE strategy?

Hi fellows, Some time ago I was forced to abandon Funtoo to Gentoo as the KDE tree fell hopelessly behind. I did not have the time nor the funto-mirroring-know-how to get involved in the matter. I did try to use the ebuilds from Gentoo by that became a dependency nightmare. Quite a lot have changed in Funtoo since then. Recently there has been a general upgrade of the kde-plasma/plasma-meta and KDE was up to date for a while, but are no longer. Question is, will the status of KDE depend on once in a while heroic efforts or are Funtoo aiming to mirror either Gentoo or KDE trees so t

  18. Just a note -- I forgot to re-enable gdm for GNOME, so SDDM is still the default for GNOME. Some notes here -- By default, SDDM will try to start a "GNOME on Wayland" session which will fail. Just toggle it to "GNOME on Xorg" in the top-left drop-down. And if you want to switch to GDM, just edit /etc/conf.d/xdm as root and change "sddm" to "gdm" and reboot. Then you'll be using GDM.

    AWS Image retired?

I tried to spin up an image (my first time using it). The error I got seemed to suggest that it was still available to users that had already accepted the terms, but no new users could use it. I mentioned it to @drobbins on discord and he had gotten the same mail you got. He indicated he was trying to track it down and sort it out with AWS. https://bugs.funtoo.org/browse/FL-7846 is the bug number.

Just be sure to enable 3D acceleration in your VM config (this typically is not turned on by default.) Open-vm-tools has been added to the GNOME stage3 and will enable itself if it detects that it's running in a VMware VM. Also, VirtualBox

  26. i pulled the better-initramfs stuff out, the ebuilds missing from portage, & we should not depend on remote initramfs images. debian-sources initramfs supports dmcrypt && luks && lvm.... it does all of them. i can get my build to boot, but it's a dirty ugly hack to get it to boot. its a misplaced detail SOMEWHERE.... and i think it's not supporting partlabel, requiring uuid for crypt root. i point the misloaded initrd @ /dev/sdc3 and it unlocks & finishes booting fine. it's all gravy now

  27. I tried to make this clear in the announcement, but it is worth explaining in more detail -- Sabayon Linux and Funtoo Linux are going to remain distinct things. We will make the Funtoo tree work for Sabayon so we can all contribute to the same set of packages. There is no implied change to either Funtoo or Sabayon, besides Sabayon moving to use the Funtoo tree, by announcing this collaboration. Each project continues to make decisions for its own community with no obligation to switch to different technologies unless one project decides it wants to. Over time, we will be collabo

  28. Since they're pulling gentoo packages I'm not sure how much difference the freshness of the ISO makes. I assume it's a stage4/installer package and you can build from there. For comparison, Funtoo 1.4 was released Sept '19. That's the interesting thing about this, if they have an easy installer and a more friendly package manager it could significantly extend Funtoo's reach. They are at least in the top 100 on distrowatch. That probably represents at least a doubling of users benefiting from Funtoo developments. The one concern for me is that Sabayon currently ships with systemd a

  31. Hi all, GNOME 3.36.2 has hit the tree, as well as an OpenSSL update and updates to Docker. To update, perform the following: # ego sync # emerge -auDN @world --jobs=3 # emerge @preserved-rebuild While GNOME is upgrading, apps may not launch. This is normal. After upgrading GNOME, a reboot is recommended to flush out all older GNOME processes and start up a GNOME 3.36.2 environment.

  32. Running 32-bit Win apps requires 32-bit wine. The wine available in 1.4 is 64-bit and will not run 32-bit Win binaries. The following is a quick writeup on how I did it. There are other ways, possibly better, but this one is mine and I stand by it. 🙂 I opted to use a chrooted 32-bit environment in which I installed Gentoo and wine. I started by making a ~/gentoo folder and downloading a current 32-bit Gentoo stage3 in it: mkdir gentoo cd gentoo wget <stage3_URL> You need to be root for the following steps sudo su tar xpf <stage3> cp /etc/resolv.conf

Even if you don't find a useful answer elsewhere on the site, including links to related questions that haven't helped can help others in understanding how your question is different from the rest. Write a title that summarizes the specific problem The title is the first thing potential answerers will see, and if your title isn't interesting, they won't read the rest. So make it count: P
