  1. Hey everyone, I'm pleased to announce that Funtoo Linux and Sabayon (https://www.sabayon.org) are joining forces! Now to explain what this means and how it came about. Sabayon is one of the great Open Source projects and has an amazing reputation for delivering an easy-to-use Linux desktop that is built using Gentoo. For quite a while, Funtoo has been supporting the Sabayon effort because we believe in what they do. Over the past several months, in chatting with the Sabayon team, it became really clear that we had a shared vision for creating a friendly and innovative commu

    The Funtoo Way

Hey everyone, I have updated our Development Guide to contain information on the "Funtoo Way". The "Funtoo Way" is a really important philosophy about how we do things at Funtoo and I strongly encourage everyone to read it, even if you don't consider yourself a "developer". It helps to explain how our community works and how we can work together. https://www.funtoo.org/Development_Guide Best, Daniel

  3. Hi All, To get ready for future improvements to Funtoo, I am adopting a multi-phased approach to 'fix Python'. First step is to address some issues that exist in the Gentoo python eclasses. I've updated these eclasses to be at least somewhat better than they are in Gentoo. These changes will be hitting the tree in an hour or so. For new ebuilds, you can now use the following rather than enumerating every single version of Python: PYTHON_COMPAT=( python3+ ) Because the minimum version of python3 we support is 3.7, this will ensure that the ebuild will be marked compatible with 3.7 a

  6. Hi All, core-gl-kit is now on 2.0-release by default. You will see updates to many packages. Now available are Intel Iris graphics, which is much faster and supported on modern Intel integrated graphics chipsets. To use Intel Iris, perform the following steps: # epro mix-ins -gfxcard-intel +gfxcard-intel-iris # emerge -auDN @world --jobs=3 If you want to continue with the classic drivers, or are not using Intel integrated graphics at all, you can just do the world update to get updates. Please report any issues you encounter to bugs.funtoo.org! There have been major

  8. I have posted an announcement on www.funtoo.org that we are doing an official "End of Year" pause for 2020. 2020 has been an interesting year and this is a good time to take a break if you have vacation. Funtoo will be back in 2021. Tree updates will be minimal during the break.

  10. Just going to follow up with some more info. First, thanks to pross for pointing out I had a typo in the 'epro' command above, now fixed! 🙂 The difference between Intel Iris and 'classic' Intel is that 'classic' Intel uses the xf86-video-intel driver (with ebuild of same name), which has classically been the way you get accelerated video with Intel Integrated graphics. The Iris graphics uses the more generic 'modesetting' driver (no special ebuild for this), and uses a gallium-based driver which is now a part of media-libs/mesa so xf86-video-intel is not used at all. 11. Hi all, GNOME 3.36.2 has hit the tree, as well as an OpenSSL update and updates to Docker. To update, perform the following: # ego sync # emerge -auDN @world --jobs=3 # emerge @preserved-rebuild While GNOME is upgrading, apps may not launch. This is normal. After upgrading GNOME, a reboot is recommended to flush out all older GNOME processes and start up a GNOME 3.36.2 environment.

  12. Just a note -- I forgot to re-enable gdm for GNOME, so SDDM is still the default for GNOME. Some notes here -- By default, SDDM will try to start a "GNOME on Wayland" session which will fail. Just toggle it to "GNOME on Xorg" in the top-left drop-down. And if you want to switch to GDM, just edit /etc/conf.d/xdm as root and change "sddm" to "gdm" and reboot. Then you'll be using GDM.

Also, there has been much work to get modern Intel laptop support with these stages with updated Intel open sound firmware, updated NVidia drivers, a multitude of bug fixes, as well as gnome-base/gdm back as default with added support for French keyboard layouts via gnome-base/adrien-gdm-keyboard. Please note: Non-Ryzen AMD will not be included in these updates but will be uploaded sometime at a later date. Thank you for your patience. If you have questions, issues, or just want to drop in and

We hope KDE users will enjoy this as a lot of hard work has gone into this one with over 500 KDE-plasma packages updated. If for some reason you find a bug, please report it with the relevant information needed to help troubleshoot the issue to https://bugs.funtoo.org so it can be fixed as soon as possible. AWS Image retired?

I tried to spin up an image (my first time using it). The error I got seemed to suggest that it was still available to users that had already accepted the terms, but no new users could use it. I mentioned it to @drobbins on discord and he had gotten the same mail you got. He indicated he was trying to track it down and sort it out with AWS. https://bugs.funtoo.org/browse/FL-7846 is the bug number.

  19. Hey everyone -- the latest Funtoo stages have arrived! (they have dates from 2020-12-14 to 2020-12-15). Improvements: Docker images updated on DockerHub: https://hub.docker.com/u/funtoo VMware Workstation Guest Support in GNOME stages: By default, GNOME stages are now able to run inside VMware Workstation by simply following the Install Guide. Just be sure to enable 3D acceleration in your VM config (this typically is not turned on by default.) Open-vm-tools has been added to the GNOME stage3 and will enable itself if it detects that it's running in a VMware VM. Also, VirtualBox

  21. i pulled the better-initramfs stuff out, the ebuilds missing from portage, & we should not depend on remote initramfs images. debian-sources initramfs supports dmcrypt && luks && lvm.... it does all of them. i can get my build to boot, but it's a dirty ugly hack to get it to boot. its a misplaced detail SOMEWHERE.... and i think it's not supporting partlabel, requiring uuid for crypt root. i point the misloaded initrd @ /dev/sdc3 and it unlocks & finishes booting fine. it's all gravy now

  22. https://bugs.funtoo.org/browse/FL-6561 >=libvpx-1.8.0 globally masked you could disable vpx use flag globally in /etc/portage/make.conf to eliminate any need for libvpx. I need vpx for ffmpeg and it was preventing the x265 update. I comment out the mask which is temporary which allowed the update to proceed. rj@funtoo /var/git/meta-repo/kits/core-kit/profiles/package.mask $ sudo nano funtoo-cautionary # Allow firefox to merge cleanly #>=media-libs/libvpx-1.8 You could also add the libvpx-1.7.0.ebuild from the 1.3-release branch to a local overlay.

  24. Hi All, If you are interested in testing Intel Iris graphics (new accelerated graphics for newer Intel chipsets), here's how you do it: First, make sure your system is up-to-date and you have the latest available version of ego installed (2.8.1) Next, add the following to /etc/ego.conf: [kits] core-gl-kit = 2.0-release xorg-kit = skip This will result in our 2.0-release core-gl-kit being activated, which completely replaces xorg-kit, as all of xorg has been integrated into core-gl-kit 2.0-release. We do not have a mix-in yet for intel Iris graphics. For now, set the

  26. Hi, all. Am only for me this seems strange? User/group management with packages is wrong, imho. If gentoo wants constant uid/gid for some daemons, why doesn't simply tell package maintainers to do this with enewuser/enewgroup? Why this strange idea?..

  28. (Quote emphasis mine) That may be the case from your perspective and that's perfectly fine. The reason why I made a sad reaction to the announcement (and the update) is because mine is different. To the best of my knowledge Discord requires sending all your voice data to their servers with only transport encryption, not end-to-end, so there's no reason to believe they aren't storing it. If you think conventional data breaches are dangerous, consider what would happen if a criminal element got access to a vast amount of such voice data (impersonation being only the most obvious one

So it would be a good idea to make an official announcement of many of them: SELinux Updates Firefox and Firefox-bin 69, updated thunderbird. New gfxcard-nvidia-legacy mix-in for older drivers. Updated NVIDIA drivers to latest releases. Conky updated. kde-plasma merge fixes. mesa merge fixes and version bump. ffpmeg updated to latest release, with fixes for arm-64bit. Latest Spotify release added. Openrc net-online major

Even if you don't find a useful answer elsewhere on the site, including links to related questions that haven't helped can help others in understanding how your question is different from the rest. Write a title that summarizes the specific problem The title is the first thing potential answerers will see, and if your title isn't interesting, they won't read the rest. So make it count: P

    funtoo logo ideas

I had two new ideas for this, 1) Fortissimo symbol This one is a bit of a math joke- funfun (fun x 2); which is expressed by the above symbol.. 2) Something involving an exclamation point! Funtoo is fun and exciting! So it only makes sense that the logo includes a symbol that depicts the same energy.
