	Hi folks,<br />
	<br />
	pretty new to funtoo. In general i am trying to solve all by my own, but now i got stuck in the very early stage of installing a funtoo system. I successfully installed one before reading this here: <a href="https://www.funtoo.org/Install/Introduction" rel="external nofollow">https://www.funtoo.org/Install/Introduction</a>
</p>

<p>
	But now it fails for a new system with reasons unknown to me. Steps are<br />
	- setup partitions on sda (sda1-&gt;ext2-&gt;/boot;sda2-&gt;swap;sda3-&gt;ext4-&gt;/)<br />
	-download the stage3 gnome into /mnt/funtoo, package is this one: <a href="https://build.funtoo.org/next/x86-64bit/intel64-westmere/2023-01-31/gnome-stage3-intel64-westmere-next-2023-01-31.tar.xz" rel="external nofollow">https://build.funtoo.org/next/x86-64bit/intel64-westmere/2023-01-31/gnome-stage3-intel64-westmere-next-2023-01-31.tar.xz</a>
</p>

<p>
	- then dropping this (while in /mnt/funtoo) on terminal: fchroot /mnt/funtoo /bin/bash --login<br />
	- terminal still stays at "livecd /mnt/funtoo", not "fchroot #"<br />
	- running a "ego sync" succeeeds with 0 errors<br />
	- dropping a "emerge -auDN @world" starts fine, but stops after some work and complaining about that i need at least 5 GIB to continue<br />
	<br />
	So, what i found out so far:<br />
	- inside the fchroot (pretty sure something here failed) running a "cat /etc/fstab" reveals a "overlay / overlay defaults 0 0". If i am right, i should see the sample fstab here instead<br />
	- "df -h /" says "overlay 1.8G 544M 1.3G 31%".<br />
	- "grub-install --target=i386-pc --no-floppy /dev/sda fails with "grub-install: error: failed to get path of 'overlay'"<br />
	<br />
	What am i doing wrong here?<br />
	<br />
	Thanks in advance for any help<br />
	<br />
	K.

	Hi,
</p>

<p>
	at first i wanted to build a system around the latest stage3 from the westmere build available here:<br />
	<a href="https://build.funtoo.org/next/x86-64bit/intel64-westmere/2023-01-31/" rel="external nofollow">https://build.funtoo.org/next/x86-64bit/intel64-westmere/2023-01-31/</a>
</p>

<p>
	But it failed always either on chrooting into the new system from the live system with a "Illegal Instruction" exception or failed with a manually created disk (copy stage3, create user, fstab etc.) from scratch and boot into the system from grub shell. Again here i got a kernel panic with "Atempted to kill init! exitcode=0x00000004".
</p>

<p>
	For 0x00000004, i again found some "Illegal Instruction" issue (this is for ARM cpu, but i guess the kernel exception code 0x00000004 will be same for all architectures on illegal instructions):<br />
	<a href="https://stackoverflow.com/questions/54303119/kernel-panic-with-exitcode-0x00000004-after-init" rel="external nofollow">https://stackoverflow.com/questions/54303119/kernel-panic-with-exitcode-0x00000004-after-init</a>
</p>

<p>
	I found several reports on that issue here:<br />
	<a href="https://bugs.funtoo.org/browse/FL-5730?jql=text%20~%20%22westmere%22" rel="external nofollow">https://bugs.funtoo.org/browse/FL-5730?jql=text ~ "westmere"</a>
</p>

<p>
	<a href="https://bugs.funtoo.org/browse/FL-6327" rel="external nofollow">https://bugs.funtoo.org/browse/FL-6327</a>
</p>

<p>
	<a href="https://bugs.funtoo.org/browse/FL-5730" rel="external nofollow">https://bugs.funtoo.org/browse/FL-5730</a>
</p>

<p>
	all have something to do with lack of instructions (eg. aes,sse4_x) on lower end cpus.
</p>

<p>
	The actual westmere stage states in the build info that it is compiled with aes, sse4_x instructions. My P6200 definitly does not support it.
</p>

<p>
	cpuid2cpuflags gives me this:
</p>

<p>
	CPU_FLAGS_X86: mmx mmxext popcnt sse sse2 sse3 ssse3<br />
	lscpu flags info also does not include any aes or sse4_x instructions
</p>

<p>
	So the question here is: What stage should i use to get best performance results on my P6200 cpu?
</p>

<p>
	The last comment from drobbins here says that one should use the intel64-nehalem stage3:<br />
	<a href="https://bugs.funtoo.org/browse/FL-5730" rel="external nofollow">https://bugs.funtoo.org/browse/FL-5730</a>
</p>

<p>
	But having a look at the flags also show aes and sse4_x flags:'<br />
	<a href="https://build.funtoo.org/next/x86-64bit/intel64-nehalem/2023-01-30/build-info.json" rel="external nofollow">https://build.funtoo.org/next/x86-64bit/intel64-nehalem/2023-01-30/build-info.json</a>
</p>

<p>
	So the question already asked in the title is: What stage3 to use for Pentium 6200 (westmere) to get best performance results?<br />
	<br />
	As a very, very new Funtoo user i didnt expect all these obstacles, but hey, if its too easy, its not fun <span class="ipsEmoji">🙂</span><br />
	<br />
	Thanks in advance<br />
	<br />
	K.

	Recently I've upgraded my backup-server system and installed OpenRC instead of SysV. During the switchover process a command is given to populate the /etc/rcX.d/ directories from init.d. I have just installed funtoo on an external disk connected to a laptop and everything has gone well. This is a multiboot set-up with some Linux distros on the external disk and Windows on the internal, just in case I may need it, which is extremely rare.
</p>

<p>
	I have used funtoo in this set-up for about an year without problems, but I accidentally damaged 3 partitions recently and that is why I am reinstalling.
</p>

<p>
	I am still pretty much of a newbie, without formal technical background and I don' t like to mess around with grub. I have been booting most of my multiboot set-ups with Manjaro since my previous favorite bootloader (in Mint) failed to boot Manjaro.
</p>

<p>
	funtoo's installation guide points the use of ego boot, which led me to post a question here -<br />
	 <a href="https://forums.funtoo.org/topic/5005-can-i-have-funtoo-in-a-multiboot-set-up/" rel="">https://forums.funtoo.org/topic/5005-can-i-have-funtoo-in-a-multiboot-set-up/ </a> - when I first installed funtoo.  Unfortunately I don't remember how I dealt with it then in order to have the good result I had. I expect things will work if I just update grub in the booting distribution, which at the moment happens to be MX-Linux, and is working well as a test after I used it on older very limited machine.
</p>

<p>
	I have also been able to boot multiboots by writing "40_custom" files, so  I think I can get funtoo started somehow but I don't want to miss &lt;ego boot&gt;, if possible.
</p>

<p>
	The main reason for this post is that  I have been waiting to find time to try the multibooting suggestion proposed at  <a href="https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=42&amp;t=315584&amp;p=1807167&amp;hilit=pbear+tutorial+custom+grub#p1807167" rel="external nofollow">https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=42&amp;t=315584&amp;p=1807167&amp;hilit=pbear+tutorial+custom+grub#p1807167</a>   which requires installation  of grub to the PBR of non-booting distros, but I am afraid to damage my funtoo installation if I install grub to the PBR of  funtoo's root partition.
</p>

<p>
	When I searched for this topic the only relevant text I found  was this - at  <a href="https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/709783/cannot-find-a-grub-drive-for-dev-sda1-check-your-device-map" rel="external nofollow">https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/709783/cannot-find-a-grub-drive-for-dev-sda1-check-your-device-map</a><span>:</span>

			 ... Are you trying to install GRUB with grub-install /dev/sda1?
		</p>

		<p>
			Since GRUB practically requires access to MBR and the unused space between the MBR and the first partition when installing for BIOS-style boot process, try grub-install /dev/sda. If it still displays the same error message, just write your own /boot/grub/device.map file. In your case, its contents could be just
		</p>

		<p>
			(hd0)    /dev/sda
		</p>

		<p>
			(Ideally, you would use an appropriate /dev/disk/by-id/... pathname in place of /dev/sda, but that's not mandatory.)
		</p>

		<p>
			grub-install /dev/sda1 would attempt to embed GRUB's boot block into PBR of partition sda1 instead of the MBR. Since most filesystems won't have a fixed space for bootloader, GRUB's boot block would have to point at /boot/grub/i386-pc/core.img by physical disk location, which used to be a very seriously discouraged installation mode. Modern versions of GRUB might no longer support installing GRUB that way at all.
		</p>

		<p>
			The problem is, the boot block code needs to be so small it won't understand filesystems, so it reads the GRUB image using raw disk block numbers determined at GRUB installation time. For this to work, the GRUB core image needs to be placed somewhere where its physical location on disk is guaranteed to stay the same. From the OS viewpoint, /boot/grub/i386-pc/core.img is a regular file, so a defragmentation tool or a smart filesystem driver might occasionally move it to a different physical location on-disk: that would cause a total boot failure.
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>
	</div>
</blockquote>

<p>
	I am pretty unsure about what to do.
</p>

<p>
	P.s.: It just occurred to me that maybe I should rather post this question to some GRUB forum as far as custom.cfgs are concerned,  but as far as funtoo is concerned you guys are my preferred source to answer whether funtoo can have  grub in its PBR.

	Used Gentoo minimal CD for 32 bit systems, also Funtoo distribution of 32 bit systems Generic Linux
</p>

<p>
	Everything worked well and fast for one hour starting from Step 1 to Step 12.
</p>

<p>
	Then I typed `emerge -auDN @world`, it asked me if I wanted to update python and some other software, altogether it would be something like 74 packages to update. I pressed "Yes" sensing that with a fast internet and 74 packages, I could update things quickly.
</p>

<p>
	At that point, lines after lines flashed across my tiny screen in the Acer Aspire notebook, endless .... it's 4 PM now, there is no hope of this thing ever going to finish, it's barely 18 of 74 packages!

	Can someone please explain how I can get out of this plain text apocalypse?

<p>
	The file that it's complaining about <em>does</em> exist in my system under <em>/usr/lib64/binutils/x86_64-pc-linux-gnu/2.32/libbfd-2.32.0.gentoo-sys-devel-binutils-st.so</em>.
</p>

<p>
	Can anyone give me pointers on how to convince this ebuild to complete?
