[SOLVED] gentoo-sources > 2.6.32 randomly freezes on poweroff

Hi,

I have a constant problem with gentoo-sources. Every kernel newer than 2.6.32 randomly freezes at poweroff. I can get freeze once for 20 poweroffs or 4 in a row. It doesn't matter if I shutdown it from using X server or console
I get this comunicate but the system doesn't shutdown

[XYZ] Power down.

Re: [SOLVED] gentoo-sources > 2.6.32 randomly freezes on poweroff

Could be a Gentoo specific patch  (ACPI issue). Do you experience the same kind of problem with a vanilla kernel?

Re: [SOLVED] gentoo-sources > 2.6.32 randomly freezes on poweroff

I haven't used other kernels before. I'll run on vanilla-sources for some time and will say the results. I hope that the results will help to diagnose and solve the problem because I would like to use gentoo-sources.
Thanks for reply.

Re: [SOLVED] gentoo-sources > 2.6.32 randomly freezes on poweroff

For what reason would you use Gentoo-sources? I always use vanilla kernels just because it avoids a bunch of patches on the top of something that is messy enough in itself.

Re: [SOLVED] gentoo-sources > 2.6.32 randomly freezes on poweroff

Mostly out of habit and gentoo handbook convinced me to it

gentoo-sources is a kernel based on Linux (...) lightly patched to fix security problems, kernel bugs (...)

I haven't even bother to try other kernels

EDIT
Poweroff freeze also randomly occures in vanilla-sources.

Re: [SOLVED] gentoo-sources > 2.6.32 randomly freezes on poweroff

I've just finished with installing Funtoo GNU/Linux. The system is powered by sys-kernel/sysrescue-std-sources compiled with binary USE flag. It's kind of genkernel.

Same problem with shutdown.

shutdown -h now hangs or freezes. It hangs when consolekit is not launched at boot (default run-level). It freezes when consolekit is up. I tried fixing that issue by adding reboot=a on the kernel line. It doesn't work.

sys-kernel/sysrescue-std-sources as its counterpart gentoo-sources is supplied with lot of patches : those from Gentoo and those from SystemeRescueCD. That might be the problem with ACPI because I've never encountered power off issues when installing kernel from source.

I read in an other post (http://forums.funtoo.org/viewtopic.php?id=887) that funtoo.org now has a vanilla kernel with no initrd. I will give it a try.

So.. what should I do? Report a bug I guess, but where? LKML, kernel bugzilla?

Use a vanilla kernel, if you experience the same kind of troubles at the end please open a bug on kernel.org.

Re: [SOLVED] gentoo-sources > 2.6.32 randomly freezes on poweroff

I've not experienced this problem myself, but apparently it's pretty common. This blog post suggests trying different reboot parameters on your linux kernel command line to see if one of them solves the problem. These options are also documented in the reboot.c source code.

Good Luck..

Re: [SOLVED] gentoo-sources > 2.6.32 randomly freezes on poweroff

I think that running lspci will provide you with information on your ACPI components then giving you some indications on how to properly set them in .config.

Re: [SOLVED] gentoo-sources > 2.6.32 randomly freezes on poweroff

@aramis_qc
I don't know what to change in .config (imo it's set ok according to lspci output and my little "knowledge"). My lspci and .config output is in first post, if you have any suggestions I would be grateful if you share them.

@jasn
I always poweroff and reboot my PC from xfce level. Reboot works properly everytime, poweroff problems like I wrote before.. Anyways, does this script/program(?) affects also poweroff or only reboot? Does that reboot kernel parameter affects on poweroff?

Cheers!

Re: [SOLVED] gentoo-sources > 2.6.32 randomly freezes on poweroff

The ACPI is an abstraction layer (i.e. interface) between the operating system and the underlying hardware. This interfaces takes the form of several components, the most visible from a user point of view are ACPI tables stored in your machine firmware. Those tables handle various parameters and machine independent code (AML, translated form a 'source code' by an ASL compiler) that enables the operating system to access to several hardware parts (fans, batteries, CPU power states, front panels buttons...)  in a unified manner between vendors. The problems is: many manufacturers ship broken tables or use stuff beyond the core ACPI specifications.

Most of the time ACPI is assimilated to power management, this is effectively the case but ACPI is a bit more general (configuration). If your kernel is ACPI aware (ACPI support enabled) it will handle an ACPI machine without any efforts on your side.

In brief words: watching the output of lspci won't help at all. Jasn pointed a link in a above message, try to see what happens when reboot=bios is inserted on the Grub command line.

From the blog post;

Purpose: There are some machines on which Linux will freeze, after a restart or a shutdown command is issued, right at the very end of the process forcing you to do a hard reset – press the reset/power button the system or plug the cord which is not good.In this post we will see how you can resolve almost 99% of freeze/hang that occurs during shutdown or reboot.

Why this happens

There are many reasons why this happens – some times it is an BIOS issue or sometimes it's just that your system has a different kind of hardware setup, for example no keyboard controller, and Linux (the kernel) does not understand how to tackle that situation. Most of the time if it is a BIOS issue it is not very easy to ask your system vendor to give you an immediate BIOS fix that will take care of the issue and hence you have to rely on some kernel parameters that you need to pass to fix the hang/freeze issue.

Let's say you bought a new machine and you notice that your Linux distribution hangs at the very end of the reboot/shutdown process, upon giving any of the following commands:

# shutdown -r now
# shutdown -h now
# reboot
# halt
# poweroff
# Ctrl+Alt+Del

Solution

In order to fix the issue, you should try one-by-one passing the following parameter to the kernel, in the form of "reboot=<parameter>", at the time of boot:

warm =  Don't set the cold reboot flag

cold = Set the cold reboot flag

bios = Reboot by jumping through the BIOS (only for X86_32)

smp = Reboot by executing reset on BSP or other CPU (only for X86_32)

triple = Force a triple fault (init)

kbd = Use the keyboard controller. cold reset (default)

acpi = Use the RESET_REG in the FADT

efi = Use efi reset_system runtime service

pci = Use the so-called "PCI reset register", CF9

force = Avoid anything that could hang.

Good Luck..

Re: [SOLVED] gentoo-sources > 2.6.32 randomly freezes on poweroff

Unfortunately same issue with

# cat /proc/cmdline
BOOT_IMAGE=/kernel-3.0.6 root=/dev/sdb5 rootfstype=reiserfs vga=775 reboot=bios

Ofc "reboot=bios" is set in grub.cfg

Just for incurance, I'm on Intel Core2Quad but my CHOST is "i686-pc-linux-gnu"

Re: [SOLVED] gentoo-sources > 2.6.32 randomly freezes on poweroff

Didn't Daniel quote such a thing on the ML recently?

I have not had time to do this. But I did track down a serious bug in
RHEL5 and RHEL6 kernels that was impacting Funtoo -

http://bugzilla.openvz.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2016#c15

That process was extremely time consuming, eating up more than an
entire month's worth of weekends, but is now resolved. It was causing
frequent crashing of funtoo servers.

I've moved funtoo.org over to Linux 3.1.0 to resolve the issue.

Regards,

Daniel

Is this related?

Re: [SOLVED] gentoo-sources > 2.6.32 randomly freezes on poweroff

I've just completed an installation of Funtoo on my P4. It is powered by vanilla-sources 3.1.0. No issue with power off. There's no issue with Funtoo and vanilla-sources 3.1.0 running on laptop (core i5) too.

Re: [SOLVED] gentoo-sources > 2.6.32 randomly freezes on poweroff

One freeze so far since Tuesday when using 3.1.0. I can say that they definitely occur less than previous freezes on other kernels.

I've removed vga=775 option from my grub.cfg I believe that somewhere I've read that this caused freezes but I'm not sure (I didn't use framebuffer anyway). I will give it a shot.
If this won't help I will add reboot=acpi, bios, cold option to grub.cfg do you think that this is a good idea?

Anyway I will inform you whether it is solved or reported to kernel bugs.

Cheers!

Yes definitely, it can be a good idea. When having to deal with that kind of bug the usual suspect is ACPI but several sources can be problematic.

hi, sorry for refreshing but adding "pci=noacpi" to grub.cfg solved problem permanently.
I think that the topic can be closed now.
