I have been sizing up my options and I'm getting ready to order a new system for my home server.
I plan on running funtoo, xen ( for gpu passthrough to win7 vm for a itunes server and what not ), and zfs storage ( raidz (8) 2 TB drives (1) 128GB ssd arc cache) on a LSI 9201-16i.
I think that I have the software kinks, xen and zfs on the same system, worked out, as I have tested it on my existing core2duo with 8GB of ram ( Maxed Out ). Can't test gpu passthrough, no VT-D support . But I have created zvol backed xen pv's. Trying to get pxebooting to work right now.
I have settled on the following items:
Motherboard - Supermicro X9SRL-F-O
CPU - Intel E5 2620
Ram - Kingston 32GB Kit (4x8GB Modules) 1600MHz ECC
Host Drives - (2) Samsung 840 Series 2.5 inch 120GB
GPU - (2) XFX AMD Radeon HD 7750 - single slot cards
Parts that I currently Have are:
Intel PRO/1000 Dual Port Server Adapter
Silverstone Tek EC04 USB 3.0 PCI Express Card
(1) Crucial m4 128GB
(4) Seagate SV35 2 TB HD's
(4) WD EARS 2 TB HD's
My logic for going with a LGA 2011 is more ram, and more pcie lanes, and maybe Intel might keep LGA 2011 around for another cycle as it's a server platform.
Any input ?
I went kinda stupid.
I bought -
Supermicro X9DRI-LN4F+-O Dual LGA2011 /Intel C602/ DDR3/ SATA3/ V&4GbE/ EATX Server Motherboard
Quad Intel i350 Gigabit Ethernet Controller
4x PCI-Express 3.0 x16 Slots; 2x PCI-Express 3.0 x8 Slots
24x 240pin DDR3 Slots
(2) Intel E5 2620
Kingston 32GB Kit (4x8GB Modules) 1600MHz ECC
Corsair HX 1050 Watt ATX/EPS power supply
I have never spent that kinda money on a system before.
