(solved-removed vlc) VLC player just blinks, disappears

I have followed Gentoo Wiki to the dot. Emerged, unmerged, reemerged vlc player. Installs without problem, but does not open up. No error message. Basic display of VLC itself is not seen. Any inputs appreciated
Pl. see below

san2ban@KRISHNA ~ $ vlc options
VLC media player 2.0.3 Twoflower (revision 2.0.2-93-g77aa89e)
[0x6051e8] main libvlc: Running vlc with the default interface. Use 'cvlc' to use vlc without interface.
[0x6c1e88] qt4 interface error: Unable to load extensions module

Re: (solved-removed vlc) VLC player just blinks, disappears

I tought that you didn't have the qt4 use flag, but it's not the case.

Since you have the qt4 stuff, you could try smplayer and see if it's working.

Segmentation fault

I believe the error "unable to load extensions module" is not fatal but occurs because you have lua disabled.  You can enable the vlc extensions by adding "lua" to the use flags.

The segmentation fault is as likely from qt as from vlc itself.  A quick google search for "vlc segfaults" gets a lot of hits sad  And the fix is often some random change like removing the old configuration files from the user home directory.

You can consider what qt packages you installed prior to vlc; a neat utility for looking at your emerge history is "genlop".  For example, "genlop -l --date thursday" will list everything that you've emerged since last thursday.

Maybe it will help if you re-emerge vlc with lua added.  If it still segfaults try running vlc from a new user account:  does it still segfault?

Re: (solved-removed vlc) VLC player just blinks, disappears

I know this is not a fix or anything, but could you emerge mplayer or mplayer2 and try that via command line? When mplayer crashes its output is much more verbose. If mplayer does crash, re-merge it with cpudetection use flag enabled. But first try without.

I'd suggest using mplayer2 and libav.

Re: (solved-removed vlc) VLC player just blinks, disappears

Hello Juippsi

mplayer2 plays the .gp files, from command line. Still, vlc only blinks, disappears. Is there no gui for mplayer2?
Should I discard vlc? if it does not work .....

Re: (solved-removed vlc) VLC player just blinks, disappears

I'm sorry I'm not familiar with VLC, I have never used it myself.

If mplayer can play the file then the file is not corrupted and problem is indeed with VLC. Try messing with the USE flags or debugging VLC if that's possible.
http://crunchbanglinux.org/forums/topic … debug-vlc/

Verbose logs can help finding the problem. It can be with Qt libraries, or encoding. Does VLC play any file at all?

Sorry I'm quite tired and can't organize my thoughts clearly here.

I use smplayer2 as an alternative to vlc for those times when vlc acts up.  I just keep both installed.  Smplayer2 is very nice for watching mp4 lectures from those online courses from Stanford, Berkeley, MIT, because the "[" key slows down playback for those intense, hard to follow sections, and the "]" key speeds up playback for getting through a lecture in less time.  [You don't actually need the gui for that feature: bare mplayer is quite useable and does the "speed up" and "slow down" playback].
