Different link speeds reported by nm-tool and nm-applet.

I have the following packages installed:

  • net-misc/networkmanager-0.9.8.2-r2

  • gnome-extra/nm-applet-0.9.6.4-r1

When connected wirelessly to my home router, nm-applet lists my link speed as "5 Mb/s" while nm-tool lists it as "54 Mb/s". When I connected wirelessly to the network at work this morning, both nm-applet and nm-tools reported my link speed at "1 Mb/s".

I did a quick download test at work by downloading the ISO for SystemRescueCd. When connected wirelessly, Firefox averaged about 1.2 MB/s. When wired into the network, the average was about 1.5 - 1.8 MB/s.

So maybe I just shouldn't put too much stock in the link speeds reported by either tool?

(Edited to provide more details.)

1.5 - 1.8 MB/s  is normal for a G wireless network...

My point was that 1.5 - 1.8 MB/s is much greater than the link speed (1 Mb/s = 125 KB/s) reported by nm-applet/nm-tool. That, combined with the disparity in the link speed as reported by nm-applet and nm-tool when connected to my home network led to my question:
