I have not reported this bug so far but vlc 2.2.0 has several troubles:

  1. FreeRDP >= 1.2 removed a public function thus => "access/rdp.c:507:5: error: implicit declaration of function ‘freerdp_channels_global_uninit’ [-Werror=implicit-function-declaration]"
  2. The use flag rdp has been removed so a patch must be applied on VLC (or FreeRDP must be downgraded)
  3. A lot of use flags are undocumented right now

Would forking the package be suitable? At least for the time taken by the upstream to fix it.

I would rather wait till some patches arrive. I have tried it and some features are outrigth broken (could not dock video in main window).

vlc is already forked by Funtoo for some extended time. I've masked a rdp USE flag. Currently freerdp is broken somehow, only a git versions are working.
